Chapter 4

Anna did not know Lily’s father had ever met Maura.

At least, she thought she didn’t.

His name was Daniel Bennett.

He died two years earlier.

Warehouse accident.

Ordinary on paper.

Not ordinary to me.

The name stayed in my head until memory finally connected it.

Daniel Bennett had worked for one of my logistics companies.

Not a soldier.

Not Mafia.

Maintenance supervisor.

Quiet man.

Eight years earlier, a loading platform failed during a late-night inspection.

I had been standing beneath it.

Daniel saw the support beam shift and shoved me clear.

The platform collapsed where I had been standing.

He broke his shoulder.

I sent him money.

He refused half.

Said I owed him nothing because anybody decent would have done it.

I remembered liking him.

I did not know he had a daughter.

I looked at Anna.

“Did Daniel ever mention me?”

Her expression changed.

“You knew him?”

“Yes.”

She sat slowly.

“He said he helped someone important once.”

“He saved my life.”

Anna stared.

Lily looked at me.

“My daddy saved you?”

“Yes.”

She smiled.

That hit harder than expected.

Anna’s eyes filled.

“He never told me who.”

“Why?”

“He hated making people feel indebted.”

That sounded exactly like the man I remembered.

Then Anna said something else.

“After he died, a woman from the foundation contacted me.”

My attention sharpened.

“What woman?”

“I don’t remember the name.”

“Describe her.”

Anna looked toward the doorway where Maura had been taken away from public view by my guards.

“Older. Expensive coat. Diamond earrings.”

Silence.

“What did she say?”

“That Daniel had already received enough help from wealthy men in his lifetime.”

My hands tightened.

“Exact words?”

“Almost.”

Anna swallowed.

“She said some families learn to survive by attaching themselves to powerful people.”

There it was.

Maura did not merely know Lily.

May you like

She knew Daniel.

And whatever happened between them had started before the hospital calendar existed.
