Chapter 13

The donor campaign changed.
Not into Lily’s campaign.
That was important.
The foundation stopped selecting one “face.”
Instead, they funded a broader mobility program serving multiple children.
Less dramatic.
Less marketable.
Better.
Carter Mills remained included.
So did Lily.
No child had to lose for another to receive help.
That was the structure Maura had insisted was impossible.
Turns out impossible often means inconvenient to someone’s preferred system.
Anna called me after the announcement.
“You did this?”
“No.”
“You helped.”
“Yes.”
She accepted that.
Progress.
Lily’s surgery was scheduled for six weeks later.
No promises.
No spectacle.
I visited once before.
She was decorating her wheelchair with stickers.
Including more purple dinosaurs.
“Mr. Dominic?”
“Dominic.”
“My mom says you’re scary.”
Anna nearly dropped a bag.
I looked at Lily.
“She’s right.”
Lily smiled.
“You don’t look scary.”
“Terrible judge of character.”
She laughed.
Then asked:
“Did you know my daddy?”
“Yes.”
“Was he brave?”
I thought.
“Yes.”
“Like you?”
“No.”
That surprised Anna.
“Better.”
Lily frowned.
“How?”
“He did the right thing without needing people afraid of him.”
Silence.
That one was for me as much as her.
Daniel pushed me out from under collapsing steel because somebody was in danger.
No audience.
No rank.
No reward.
Then years later, he challenged wealthy people for stealing from children.
Again, no power behind him.
That kind of courage made mine look easier.
Lily nodded as if satisfied.
May you like
Then gave me another dinosaur sticker.
I put it beside the first.
