Chapter 16

Months later, Lily could stand with support for short periods.

Not always.

Not easily.

She was proud the first time.

Then immediately asked for her wheelchair because she was tired.

Good.

No performance.

Anna returned to work.

The fundraiser sign disappeared.

Not because asking for help was shameful.

Because the support structure finally worked.

The clear donation cup stayed on Lily’s dresser.

She liked putting crayons in it.

I saw it once when I visited.

“That the same cup?”

Anna nodded.

Lily shouted from the other room:

“It’s art now!”

I smiled.

Good.

Objects should be allowed new jobs.

The hospital calendar changed too.

Anna kept the old one.

Not because she wanted a reminder of Maura.

Because Lily had drawn stars over the dates that finally happened.

The crossed-out evaluation remained visible underneath one yellow star.

I looked at it.

“One day she’ll ask.”

Anna nodded.

“What will you tell her?”

“The truth.”

Good.

Not the dramatic version.

Not Maura the monster.

Daniel the saint.

Dominic the rescuer.

The truth was messier.

A donor abused influence.

Employees stayed quiet.

A mother adapted.

A child begged.

A stranger noticed.

Then enough people stopped pretending the system was normal.

That story mattered more than hero mythology.

Anna looked at me.

“You know you’re still going to be the scary Mafia man in her version.”

I sighed.

“Unfair.”

“You dumped gutter water on a woman.”

“Context.”

May you like

She laughed.

Fair.
