Chapter 11

Maura did not disappear quietly.

Of course not.

She called three major donors and told them I had intimidated the foundation.

That part was almost true.

My name intimidates people whether I ask it to or not.

So I did something she did not expect.

I stayed out of the next meeting.

Anna went.

Dr. Mercer went.

Sarah went.

I did not.

If the truth only survived while I sat in the room, then Maura could dismiss it as fear.

Without me, the board still removed her from allocation authority.

Two donors resigned in protest.

Fine.

Three others stayed.

One increased his contribution after hearing what happened.

Interesting.

Maura had overestimated how many people were loyal to her versus merely familiar with her.

Common mistake.

She confronted me outside my restaurant.

“You think you won.”

“No.”

She laughed.

“Then what is this?”

“Your consequence.”

She stared.

“You humiliated me in public.”

“You humiliated yourself before I arrived.”

Her jaw tightened.

“You poured dirty water on me.”

“Yes.”

I did not pretend that part was noble.

It was anger.

Personal.

Immediate.

I had matched humiliation with humiliation.

Effective for fifteen seconds.

Not the thing that fixed anything.

I told her that.

She looked confused.

“The water didn’t cost you the foundation.”

Silence.

“Your choices did.”

That landed differently.

Good.

I continued.

“You want me to be the villain because then you can remain the victim.”

Her face hardened.

“But I didn’t make you track Lily.”

No answer.

“I didn’t make you delay her evaluation.”

Silence.

May you like

“And I didn’t make you hate a dead man enough to punish his daughter.”

That was the sentence she could not answer.
