Chapter 7

The ambient noise of the crowded birthday banquet—the clinking of crystal stemware, the low, rumbling laughter of the capos, the soft classical music drifting from the corner—continued for a fraction of a second longer before the sheer gravity of Nolan's movement severed it entirely.
Nolan held the phone in his tattooed hand. He did not look at the screen. He slowly turned his head, the thick, slightly wavy hair shifting across his forehead. He bypassed his fiancée completely, turning his broad shoulders toward his right side.
He looked directly into Elise’s eyes.
The fair, rosy skin of her delicate cheekbones was entirely pale, her expressive brows drawn together in profound, helpless agony. Moisture was gathering rapidly along her lower eyelids, catching the gentle golden highlights from the cascading crystal chandeliers.
"Elise," Nolan said.
His deep, measured voice cut through the room like a perfectly sharpened blade. He allowed a controlled, terrifying pause to stretch after her name. The sound was not a shout, but the cold inquiry carried a gravity that commanded absolute obedience.
Every single guest stopped eating. The low hum of conversation died in their throats. Dozens of powerful men and women, dressed in tailored suits and silk gowns, turned their heads toward the head of the table in total, suffocating silence. The bright, luminous light of the room suddenly felt incredibly harsh and exposing.
"What did Vanessa delete?" Nolan asked.
The question hung in the air, heavy and lethal. Nolan’s cold, observant eyes remained locked onto Elise, demanding the truth, offering her the full, terrifying weight of his protection in front of the entire criminal underworld.
Vanessa smoothly adjusted her posture, the sculpted satin of her evening gown rustling against the champagne velvet chair. She realized instantly that her private act of cruelty had just been dragged into the glaring, public light by the most dangerous man in the city.
She met Nolan’s stunning, intense gaze with a faint, reassuring smile. She projected the image of a devoted, fiercely protective fiancée attempting to soothe a trivial misunderstanding that was ruining a special occasion.
"Just a distraction, darling," Vanessa said, her voice remaining smoothly melodic, dripping with manufactured pity and amusement.
She offered the lie with effortless, chilling perfection. But her eyes frantically searched Nolan’s angular face for any sign of agreement, any indication that he would accept her version of reality and dismiss the beautiful housemaid's obvious distress.
Nolan did not nod. He did not look at Vanessa. He kept his eyes locked on Elise, waiting for her answer.

After speaking her lie, Vanessa shifted her gaze. She delivered a brief, razor-sharp warning glance directly at Elise—a silent, deadly promise of destruction if the housemaid dared to contradict the future bride of the mafia boss.
Elise stood frozen, her fingers still resting against the fine porcelain plate. She felt the eyes of the entire room burning into her. She saw the venomous threat in Vanessa's eyes. She knew the cost of defying a woman who wore the boss's engagement ring. But looking down into Nolan's cold, perceptive eyes, she saw the quiet, unspoken affection that had always existed between them. She saw a man who would not let her suffer in silence.
