Chapter 4

The oppressive weight of the grand dining room felt heavier than ever as Elise re-entered the luminous space. The cascading crystal chandeliers continued to cast their warm, golden light, but to Elise, the room had become a gilded cage. Every breath felt like inhaling broken glass. Her mother’s final words were currently trapped in the pocket of the cruelest woman she had ever met, and she was utterly powerless to retrieve them.

Elise moved with her signature graceful posture, though her slender frame felt incredibly fragile. She kept her head slightly bowed, allowing her dark hair and the white ruffled maid headband to shield her expressive eyes from the guests. She collected empty fine porcelain plates and refilled crystal stemware with mechanical precision, a beautiful ghost haunting the birthday banquet.

At the head table, Nolan sat in his tailored dark three-piece suit, an impenetrable fortress of masculine authority. He listened to the regional bosses deliver their reports, his face an angular mask of cold calculation. But his perceptive eyes were not on the men speaking to him.

He was watching Elise.

Nolan had noticed her absence, however brief it had been. And he certainly noticed the change in her upon her return. The fair, rosy flush that usually graced her delicate cheekbones was entirely gone, replaced by a haunting, ashen pallor. Her hands, usually steady and confident, possessed a subtle, heartbreaking tremor as she poured the wine.

"The casino revenues are up twelve percent this quarter, Nolan," a capo stated proudly, pulling Nolan’s attention back to the polished walnut table. "The new security protocols are keeping the cheaters out."

Nolan slowly turned his head, the extremely short stubble on his sharp jawline catching the clear lighting. He fixed the capo with his cold, intimidating eyes.

"Do you believe a twelve percent increase justifies the noise your men are making on the west side?" Nolan asked, his deep, measured voice dropping the temperature at the table.

"The noise is temporary, boss," the capo stammered, shifting uncomfortably in his champagne velvet chair. "We are just clearing out the rival elements. It will be quiet by next week."

"Are you assuring me that I won't have to send my own men to clean up your mess?" Nolan inquired, his artistic tattoos flexing as he rested his hand on his crystal glass.

"You won't have to lift a finger, Mr. Arden," the capo promised hastily.

"Is that a guarantee?" Nolan asked, holding the man's gaze until the capo visibly swallowed hard and nodded.

Vanessa, sitting beside Nolan’s left shoulder, watched the exchange with a faint, smug smile. She adored the sheer terror her fiancé inspired in other men. She reached for her champagne, the sculpted satin of her gown shimmering. She felt the heavy, rectangular weight of the confiscated phone in her hidden pocket. A twisted sense of satisfaction bloomed in her chest. She had put the pretty housemaid in her place.

"You are so commanding, darling," Vanessa purred, leaning closer to Nolan. "It is intoxicating to watch you work."

Nolan did not return her smile. He did not lean into her space. He looked past her, his eyes tracking Elise as she moved toward the kitchen doors to retrieve the dessert service.

"Is power only intoxicating when it is used to instill fear?" Nolan asked, his voice a low, quiet rumble that offered no affection.

Vanessa’s smile tightened slightly. "Power is about control, Nolan. It is about ensuring everyone knows their place in your world. Don't you agree?"

"Do I look like a man who requires validation for my methods?" Nolan asked, his gaze finally shifting to meet hers, cold and entirely unreadable.

May you like

Vanessa laughed softly, a bright, melodic sound that failed to reach her eyes. "Of course not, darling. You are a law unto yourself."

Nolan looked back toward the heavy mahogany doors, waiting for the housemaid to return. The quiet mutual affection they shared was built on unspoken moments, and right now, every instinct in his body was screaming that something had deeply wounded her.
