Chapter 10

The crackling of the carved marble fireplace seemed deafening in the profound, suffocating silence of the dining hall. Vanessa backed away until her spine hit the ivory-paneled wall, her sculpted satin gown pooling around her. The bright, luminous light offered her no place to hide.
"You can't do this, Nolan," Vanessa whispered, her voice shaking violently. "We have an alliance. You cannot throw it away over a maid."
"Did you think I would crown a woman whose hands are stained with the emotional torture of my household?" Nolan asked, his deep voice remaining terrifyingly calm.
He didn't wait for her to process the absolute lack of mercy in his gaze. He reached into the inner pocket of his tailored dark suit, his refined artistic tattoos catching the golden light, and withdrew a heavy, encrypted mobile phone.
"Are you waiting in the grand foyer, Marcus?" Nolan asked into the receiver. He paused, listening to his unseen underboss. "Will you bring two men into the dining room immediately?"
Vanessa gasped, her hands flying to her mouth in sheer, unadulterated terror. She knew exactly what Marcus did for the Arden syndicate. He was the man who made Nolan’s problems disappear into the icy depths of the river.
"No! Nolan, please!" Vanessa shrieked, kicking off her expensive heels and scrambling backward across the hardwood floor. "You can't do this! I am a Shaw! My father will kill you! He will slaughter your entire family for this!"
The heavy mahogany double doors of the dining room swung open violently. Marcus, a towering man with a heavily scarred face and a dark trench coat, stepped into the room, flanked by two equally intimidating enforcers. They moved with absolute, silent precision, ignoring the lavish surroundings and focusing entirely on their boss.
"Will you escort my former fiancée to the holding cells in the sub-basement?" Nolan asked, not taking his eyes off the weeping woman backed against the wall.
"No! Please!" Vanessa shrieked, kicking and thrashing wildly as the two enforcers reached out and grabbed her by the arms. They hauled her to her feet with effortless strength, the delicate fabric of her gown tearing audibly at the seams. "I loved you, Nolan! You owe me! I saved you from weakness!"
"Will you ensure she is gagged if she continues to scream, Marcus?" Nolan inquired, casually adjusting the cuff of his dark suit.
Marcus nodded grimly. "Yes, boss. Let's go, princess."
The enforcers dragged Vanessa backward toward the doors. Her threats devolved into hysterical, panicked sobs that echoed down the grand hallway until the heavy doors clicked shut behind them, sealing the dining room in a profound, suffocating silence once more.
Nolan stood perfectly still for a long moment. The tension slowly bled out of his powerful shoulders. He turned his head, his thick, slightly wavy hair catching the light of the crystal chandeliers, and looked across the room to where Elise was standing.
Elise was shaking. Her sophisticated black maid dress felt incredibly thin in the aftermath of the violence. She had just witnessed the destruction of a massive mafia alliance, all because she had wept for her mother. She looked at the mafia boss, terrified of the impending war that was surely about to consume the estate.
Nolan walked slowly back across the room. He stopped a few feet away from her, his cold eyes softening completely into a gaze of quiet, profound tenderness as he took in her pale, exhausted face.
"Are you unharmed, Elise?" Nolan asked quietly, his perceptive eyes searching her delicately featured face.
"I am unharmed, sir," Elise answered, her voice trembling as she kept her hands folded over her cell phone, pressing it to her heart. "But... I know what just happened. I know the Shaw family will come for you because we spoke."
"Do you believe I would allow a woman who tortures you to remain in my home out of fear of her father?" Nolan asked, a flicker of profound, protective warmth entering his cold eyes.
"I didn't know what to expect, Mr. Arden," Elise whispered, her expressive brows drawing together. "I just wanted to hear her voice one last time."
"Did you think a monster would punish the only person with the courage to bring beauty into this house?" Nolan asked gently.
He didn't walk away. He stood there, his towering masculine frame casting a long shadow in the golden light. The rigid boundaries of class, wealth, and danger had been completely obliterated in the span of a single evening.
"Will you allow me to bring in my tech specialists tomorrow to recover the deleted file?" Nolan asked, his gaze lingering on her softly oval face. "Do you think I would let her steal that memory from you forever?"
Elise gasped, fresh tears springing to her eyes, this time born of profound relief and gratitude. "You... you can do that?"
"Is there anything in this city I cannot do?" Nolan inquired, a faint, reassuring smile finally touching his lips. He reached out, his tattooed hand gently resting on her shoulder, a heavy anchor in the uncertain world they were about to navigate together.
"Are you prepared for the war that begins tomorrow?" Nolan asked, his thumb lightly brushing her collarbone.
Elise looked up into his eyes, ready to embrace the legacy she had inadvertently entered into. She was no longer just a maid; she was under the protection of the king.
May you like
"Yes," Elise whispered.
"Shall we leave this room behind us, then?" Nolan asked, offering her his arm and leading her out into the bright, luminous light of their new reality.
