Margaret stopped apologizing for interfering.
That took time.
She had internalized Tove’s accusation that she was overprotective.
One day Mireya stumbled in the garden and scraped her knee.
Margaret moved toward her.
Then stopped herself.
I noticed.
“Why?”
She looked embarrassed.
“I don’t want to hover.”
I almost laughed.
“Go be her grandmother.”
She smiled.

That was another repair.
Tove had not only taught Mireya to distrust help.
