Chapter 10

The estate camera footage showed the full pattern.

Not one dramatic incident.

Small ones.

Tove moving the pouch higher on a shelf.

Chase telling a guard not to carry it into dinner.

Tove removing Bunny from Mireya’s bed.

Margaret returning it.

Tove watching.

Then the most important clip.

Mireya coughing in the garden.

Margaret moving toward her.

Tove blocking the path.

Not touching the child.

Just standing there.

Five seconds.

Then ten.

Margaret shoved past her.

Mireya got help.

I stopped the footage.

Tove looked at the screen.

“That was nothing.”

Margaret stood.

“No.”

Her voice shook with anger.

“I remember that day.”

She looked at Tove.

“Mireya was scared.”

Tove folded her arms.

“She always gets scared.”

There it was.

Fear itself used as evidence of exaggeration.

I turned to Chase.

“You watched this?”

He had.

“And did nothing.”

“She was fine.”

Again.

Outcome used to erase risk.

I had heard enough.

The engagement ended immediately.

Not ceremonially.

Not with speeches.

The ring came off Tove’s hand and went into a box.

She watched me do it.

“So that’s it?”

“Yes.”

“Over this?”

I looked toward my daughter.

“No.”

My voice dropped.

May you like

“Because after knowing what it feels like to struggle for air, you decided a child should prove she deserves help.”

Tove stopped speaking.
