Chapter 2

The bright, cinematic lighting of the hallway caught the unmistakable silhouette of a man stepping out from the shadows of the main estate corridor.

Bennett Ferrante was thirty-nine years old and possessed a masculine, movie-star handsomeness that commanded the very oxygen in the room. He was the undisputed Mafia Boss of the region. His thick, slightly wavy dark hair was naturally slicked back, but a few loose strands fell effortlessly over his forehead, creating a charming, almost romantic look that sharply contrasted with his lethal reputation. He had an angular face, a high-bridged nose, and a sharply defined jawline shadowed by extremely short, neatly trimmed stubble. His fair, rosy skin highlighted the cold, sharp, intimidating nature of his piercing eyes.

He wore a tailored dark three-piece suit, but his shirt was unbuttoned at the chest. Artistic tattoos crept up his neck and decorated his hands and fingers. The designs were refined and sharp, utilizing enough negative space so they didn't look dense, perfectly placed to create an attractive, dangerous look without covering his entire neck and chest.

In his large, tattooed hands, Bennett carried three beautifully wrapped boxes—model sailboats he had purchased for his children. He had left the ballroom early to retrieve them from his private study.

He took two steps into the service hall. His polished leather shoes made almost no sound.

Then, he stopped dead.

His cold eyes locked onto the scene before him. He saw Miranda standing near the exit. He saw the rolling suitcases. And then, he saw the heavy nylon straps cutting into the small, fragile wrists of his three crying children.

"Daddy!" Nora screamed, her voice tearing through the corridor.

The three wrapped model sailboats slipped from Bennett’s tattooed fingers. They hit the polished hardwood floor with a series of dull, heavy thuds, the expensive wrapping paper tearing upon impact.

Beyond the open doors of the lakeside ballroom, the oblivious guests continued to laugh and dance beneath the bright, dazzling lights, their joyful American accents providing a surreal, horrific soundtrack to the scene unfolding in the hall.

Bennett did not shout. He did not ask what was happening. The sheer, overwhelming presence of his masculine fury seemed to drop the temperature in the room to absolute zero. He stared at the straps binding his children like livestock, his chest rising and falling in slow, terrifyingly measured breaths.

Miranda froze, her fair skin turning the color of ash. She had timed his schedule perfectly; he was supposed to be in a meeting with the capos in the east wing. She stared at the dropped gifts, her mind racing desperately to construct a lie that could save her life.

No dialogue was spoken. The silence in the service hall was heavier than concrete.

Milo, Nora, and Tess stared at their father, their tear-filled eyes wide with a mixture of profound relief and lingering terror. Bennett’s eyes slowly shifted from the weeping children to the woman holding the handles of the suitcases. His jaw clenched so tightly the artistic tattoos on his neck shifted. The charming, romantic strands of hair falling over his forehead suddenly looked like the mane of a predator preparing to slaughter its prey.
