Chapter 1

The lakeside ballroom of the Ferrante estate was a masterpiece of bright, cinematic lighting, entirely devoid of any dull, yellow tint. The brilliant, pure light illuminated the vivid colors of the women’s evening gowns and the sharp, tailored suits of the men. Everyone in attendance was a white American adult, their fair and rosy skin glowing with health and immense wealth. The sharp, melodic cadence of their American accents drifted through the open double doors, a symphony of high-society laughter and clinking crystal glasses. But just beyond those doors, inside the narrow service hall, the vibrant atmosphere mutated into something deeply sinister.
The service hall was lined with a long mahogany sideboard, several folding privacy screens, and a freestanding display of miniature, meticulously crafted sailboats. Beside the sideboard sat a small security monitor.
Miranda Ferrante, thirty-two years old and draped in a flawless, sparkling evening gown, knelt on the polished hardwood floor. Her heavy diamond jewelry caught the bright light, but her fair, rosy face was twisted into a mask of cold, unfeeling calculation. She held a thick, wide nylon luggage strap in her hands.
Five-year-old Milo stood trembling in his child’s formal shirt, trousers, and pristine sneakers. Miranda violently wrapped the heavy strap around Milo’s small wrist, pulling it tight before fastening the other end to the extended handle of a large, rolling black suitcase.
"Mom... it hurts," Milo whimpered, his tiny voice echoing off the paneled walls. He pulled against the strap, but it was locked securely.
"Stop complaining," Miranda snapped, her American accent sharp and completely devoid of maternal warmth. "Stand still, or I will make it tighter."
A few feet away, four-year-old Nora and three-year-old Tess were already bound. Both girls wore beautiful, bright party dresses with soft cardigans and flats, but their rosy cheeks were stained with fresh tears. Their wrists were strapped tightly to two identical rolling suitcases. Tess let out a soft, terrified hiccup, her small fingers desperately trying to claw at the heavy nylon binding her to the luggage.
"I want Daddy," Nora cried softly, looking toward the open ballroom doors where the music swelled.
"Your father isn't coming," Miranda said coldly. She stood up, her expensive heels clicking sharply against the floorboards. She grabbed the handles of all three suitcases in her hands, her wedding ring flashing under the bright overhead lights. With a sudden, vicious jerk, she pulled the luggage toward the heavy steel service door leading to the estate's rear loading dock.
The three children stumbled forward, struggling desperately to keep their footing as they were dragged by their wrists.
"Keep up," Miranda commanded, not bothering to look back at the crying toddlers.
"Where are we going?" Milo asked, digging his sneakers into the hardwood in a futile attempt to slow her down. "Why are we attached to these bags?"
Miranda paused just inches from the heavy service door. She slowly turned her head, her eyes sweeping over the three terrified children she had helped raise. There was no love in her gaze, only the cold, calculating look of a woman securing a massive payout.

"Remember your new names," Miranda said coldly. "You are not Ferrantes anymore. If anyone asks, you do not know who Bennett is. Do you understand me?"
Tess began to wail aloud. Miranda’s jaw tightened in profound irritation, entirely unaware that the heavy doors at the opposite end of the corridor had just silently opened.
