Chapter 8

The close-up shifted instantly to Kellan. The bright, luminous colors of the dining hall felt like a harsh interrogation spotlight, emphasizing the lethal stillness that overtook the Mafia boss.

Kellan remained completely still for a brief, motionless beat. His cold, observant eyes lingered on Hugh, absorbing the absolute, terrifying truth radiating from the frail old man. He saw the genuine, unadulterated trauma in the chauffeur's tear-filled eyes. The rigid lines of Kellan's angular face did not soften, but a profound, chilling realization settled over his features. The puzzle he had been trying to solve for a year had just clicked into place.

Then, he slowly shifted his eyes.

His gaze moved first, cutting across the gold-rimmed porcelain and crystal stemware, locking directly onto Yvonne. A slight, predatory turn of his head followed, elevating his posture to its maximum, terrifying height.

His jaw firmed almost imperceptibly, the muscles flexing visibly beneath his extremely short, neatly trimmed stubble. His mouth became completely still, settling into a hard, unforgiving line. The warmth vanished entirely from his expression, replaced by the dark, empty void of an executioner.

He held Yvonne’s eyes with a cold, knowing stare.

The visual standoff suspended the dining hall in a state of impending doom. Every single guest in the massive, opulent room remained perfectly attentive, facing him, paralyzed by the public unmasking of the future bride. The silence was deafening, ringing in the ears of everyone present. No one dared to breathe, waiting for the apex predator to strike.

The end of the visual prompt left the room trapped in this suffocating vacuum of terror.

Yvonne felt her knees go weak. The sculpted sapphire silk of her evening gown seemed to offer no armor against his penetrating stare. The fair, rosy flush on her skin had turned to a sickly, translucent white. She realized that arguing against the clear, undeniable eyewitness testimony of the old man was a losing battle.

"Kellan, darling, please," Yvonne stammered, her voice a fragile, pathetic breath, entirely abandoning her polished social poise. "He is lying! He is a crazy old man! Why would you believe a coward over the woman you are going to marry?"

"Is it customary for a coward to march into a room of armed men to deliver a lie?" Kellan finally asked.

His deep, low voice rolled through the quiet room, the measured pauses striking like the heavy toll of a funeral bell.

"My family's rivals paid him!" Yvonne shrieked, tears of panic and frustration finally spilling over her fair cheeks, ruining her pristine makeup. "They want to break our alliance! They paid him to come here and slander me! You cannot believe this absurdity!"

"Do you believe my father's blood can be washed away by the tears of a liar?" Kellan inquired, his cold, perceptive eyes dissecting her false narrative with surgical precision.

Yvonne opened her mouth, her breath catching audibly in the quiet room. She looked at the towering, deeply masculine Mafia boss, realizing that the formidable intellect she had so arrogantly underestimated had just trapped her perfectly.
