Chapter 7

The silence in the grand dining hall was absolute, a suffocating vacuum that absorbed the soft, elegant warmth of the crystal chandeliers. The tall ivory candles continued to burn steadily, their reflections shimmering in the gilded ceiling moldings.
Yvonne gripped the edge of the polished walnut table, her knuckles turning white. She realized that arguing against the mere presence of the old man was failing. She needed to discredit him completely.
"Kellan, this is highly inappropriate," Yvonne stated, her American accent clipping sharply. "We are here to honor your father, not to listen to the desperate lies of the man who let him die. Send him to the basement. Your men can extract whatever fiction he is trying to sell down there."
"Are my guests offended by the pursuit of the truth in the light of day?" Kellan asked the silent room. Not a single man or woman moved or breathed a word in response.
He turned his focus away from his fiancée. He looked down at the frail, seventy-three-year-old man sitting in the velvet chair beside him.
The camera angle shifted to a tight close-up of Hugh.
The old chauffeur sat rigidly in the luxurious chair, looking completely out of place in his worn wool coat. He looked past the dark, tailored fabric of Kellan's suit. He looked directly across the table at Yvonne.
The fair, wrinkled skin of Hugh's cheeks was pale, his eyes wide with a mixture of residual terror and a sudden, desperate surge of courage. He had lived in fear for twelve months, hiding in squalor, haunted by the memory of the night his employer was gunned down. He had been terrified of the beautiful woman in the sapphire gown, terrified of the cold, calculated violence she was capable of.
But feeling the heavy, reassuring presence of Kellan standing beside him, and seeing the fierce determination in the beautiful housemaid's eyes, gave Hugh the strength he needed.
Moisture gathered rapidly along Hugh’s lower eyelids, shining in the golden candlelight. His mouth tightened against the remembered fear, the healed scar beside his jaw pulling taut.
He took a shaky breath, forcing himself to speak. He did not yell. He spoke quietly, but with a painful, devastating clarity that echoed across the ivory wall panels and gilded mirrors, impossible to misinterpret.
“You were holding the gun.”
The absolute, terrifying implication of the old man's words crashed over the dining hall. Yvonne Vale had not just been a grieving future daughter-in-law. She had been the architect and the executioner of the former boss, orchestrating the assassination to clear the path for her own ascension to power alongside Kellan.

The collective silence of the wealthy, powerful guests transformed into a suffocating vacuum. The level of calculated, psychopathic ambition required to murder a syndicate boss and then comfort his son sickened the men and women at the tables.
Yvonne’s polite, reassuring smile disappeared instantly. The facade completely shattered. Her eyes widened in sheer, unadulterated panic as the physical evidence of her treason was laid bare before the entire commission.
