Chapter 4

The medium wide shot framed the immediate, terrifying tension at the head table. The bright, airy colors of the dining hall felt suddenly charged with an explosive, high-voltage energy. The clean whites of the table linens and the polished highlights of the silver cutlery shimmered beneath the warm golden light, a stark contrast to the dark reality of the confrontation about to unfold.

Mina brought Hugh to a halt beside the empty velvet chair. The old man was trembling violently, his knuckles white around his walking cane, his eyes lowered in profound shame and terror. He could feel the lethal weight of fifty armed men staring at his back.

With meticulous care, Mina reached out with her slender hands to steady a crystal water glass resting near the empty setting. She lifted it and gently guided it into Hugh’s trembling hand, hoping the cool glass would ground him.

Hugh hesitated beside the empty chair. He did not sit. He gripped the water glass, the liquid sloshing slightly over the rim onto his worn wool coat. He kept his eyes glued to the polished walnut table, entirely unable to meet the gaze of the Mafia boss sitting just feet away.

Kellan remained perfectly still. His heavily tattooed hands rested casually on the table, the generous spacing of the ink clearly visible under the chandelier light. He absorbed the sheer terror radiating from the old man, and the fierce, protective determination standing beside him in the form of a housemaid.

Across the table, Yvonne Vale’s carefully constructed facade began to crack.

The sympathetic, reassuring smile she wore had stiffened into a brittle, plastic mask. Her fair, rosy cheeks lacked their usual color. She realized the narrative she had so carefully maintained for a year was suddenly in catastrophic jeopardy. She needed to immediately reassert her control and paint the old man as a delusional, cowardly traitor before he could utter a single word.

"What is the meaning of this?" Yvonne demanded, her American accent pitching up into a sharp, authoritative frequency. She looked directly at Mina, her eyes blazing with sudden venom. "How dare you bring that man into this room? Security!"

"Did I give you permission to issue orders at my table, Yvonne?" Kellan asked.

His deep, low voice rolled through the quiet room, the measured pause striking like a physical blow.

Yvonne’s mouth snapped shut. She swallowed hard, sinking her manicured nails into the palms of her hands. "Kellan, darling, he is a traitor. He left your father to die. He has no right to stand in this house, especially tonight."

"Does a traitor walk voluntarily into a room filled with his executioners?" Kellan inquired, his cold, perceptive eyes shifting slowly away from his fiancée.

He looked directly at the beautiful housemaid standing steadfastly beside the trembling old man. Mina felt the heavy, terrifying weight of his attention settle upon her, but she did not flinch. She had brought the truth into the light, and now she had to defend it.
