Chapter 8

The profound, ringing silence of the grand dining room settled heavily over the head table. The cascading crystal chandeliers continued to cast their warm golden light, catching the tears glistening on Elodie’s cheeks and the terrified sweat forming on Sabrina’s brow.
Rafael sat perfectly still in his tailored dark three-piece suit. He slowly turned his head, his dark, swept-back hair shifting slightly. He looked down at Elodie, who was seated in the velvet chair beside him, her arm wrapped protectively around his son.
Rafael briefly lowered his gaze. His dark eyes locked onto Elodie’s bandaged right hand resting against her white apron. The harsh, angular lines of his face softened completely, replaced by a look of profound, quiet tenderness and agonizing guilt. He had allowed this monster into his home, and the gentle woman he had quietly admired for months had paid the physical price.
Slowly, deliberately, Rafael moved his hand. He reached out, his artistic tattoos stark against his skin, and gently, with immense care, laid his palm over Elodie’s uninjured left hand. He squeezed softly, a grounding, physical reassurance that she was safe.
Then, the tenderness vanished as if it had never existed.
Rafael slowly turned his head toward Sabrina. The transition was terrifying. The loving, concerned protector was instantly replaced by the ruthless, cold-blooded mafia boss who commanded the city.
A slight, deliberate tightening of his jaw was the only movement on his face, but it spoke volumes. The very short stubble on his chin seemed to bristle with suppressed, explosive violence. He held Sabrina’s gaze with a cold, unwavering stare that promised absolute, undeniable destruction.
He held the stare in total silence. He did not yell. He did not curse. His silence was infinitely more dangerous than a scream, stripping away her diamonds, her emerald gown, and her lies, exposing the cruel, power-hungry monster trembling beneath.
Sabrina stared back, her chest heaving violently. The silence stretched, tight and unforgiving. She opened her mouth to speak, but her vocal cords were paralyzed by the sheer, overwhelming terror radiating from the man standing opposite her.
"Are you prepared to remove the ring from your finger, Sabrina, or must I cut it from your hand?" Rafael asked.
His deep voice carried a measured, lethal calm. It was not a threat; it was a logistical question.
Sabrina flinched violently. She dropped her hands, her fair skin streaked with ruined makeup, her eyes wide with primal terror. She knew the stories of what Rafael Whitlock did to traitors within his syndicate.

"You can't do this!" Sabrina choked out, the venom finally breaking through her tears as self-preservation took over. "My father is Victor Voss! He commands the eastern ports! He will burn your empire to the ground if you humiliate me like this!"
"Is your father a man who fights battles for foolish, cruel daughters?" Rafael asked quietly, never breaking his cold stare.
