Chapter 4

The realization struck Rafael with the force of a physical blow. He stared at the thick white bandages wrapping Elodie’s slender fingers, the medical gauze stark and jarring against the elegant black fabric of her maid dress. He had only been gone for four days on syndicate business. When he had left for Chicago, the gentle woman who cared for his son had been perfectly whole.

Rafael did not move frantically. He did not raise his voice or draw a weapon. The absolute stillness of his muscular, masculine frame was infinitely more dangerous. He slowly turned his head, his angular face devoid of all warmth.

He followed Elodie’s paralyzed, terrified gaze, tracking it directly to the woman sitting to his left. Then, he looked directly into Elodie’s expressive, fear-filled eyes.

"Elodie," Rafael said.

His voice was deep, quiet, and incredibly deliberate. He spoke slowly, allowing a measured, agonizing pause after her name. The sheer, commanding authority in his tone stripped away the festive atmosphere of the Christmas Eve dinner instantly.

The effect on the room was absolute. Every single dinner guest at the long banquet table stopped eating and speaking completely. The polite, affluent conversation that had barely restarted after Miles's innocent proclamation died entirely in their throats. Fifty faces turned toward the head of the table, their fair skin paling as they watched the mafia boss direct his terrifying, unbroken focus onto the housemaid.

Elodie swallowed hard, her pulse racing frantically. She met Rafael’s cold, unwavering gaze, the gold paper star clutched tightly against her white apron.

"Sir?" Elodie whispered, her voice trembling.

"Who hurt your hand?" Rafael asked.

The question hung in the bright, luminous air like an executioner's blade. It was not a casual inquiry; it was a deadly demand for accountability, dripping with the absolute promise of retribution.

The silence that followed was excruciating. Elodie’s lips parted, but no sound came out. She knew the extreme danger of crossing Sabrina Voss. Sabrina's family commanded a powerful syndicate of their own, and the woman was known for her vindictive cruelty. But looking into Rafael's perceptive eyes, feeling the sheer weight of his masculine presence demanding the truth, Elodie felt entirely trapped.

Before Elodie could formulate a lie to protect herself from further violence, a smooth, manicured hand reached out to intercept the explosive tension.

Sabrina shifted gracefully in her velvet dining chair, her luxurious emerald evening gown rustling softly. She recognized the catastrophic danger of the moment. The polished facade she had maintained all evening was suddenly under severe threat, and she needed to control the narrative before the mafia boss dismantled it completely. She sat up straighter, adjusting the diamond earrings that brushed her jawline, and prepared to extinguish the fire.
