Chapter 7

The bright, airy lighting of the ballroom seemed to spotlight the impossible dynamic unfolding at the head of the table. Sabrina stared at Elodie sitting in the velvet chair, her fair skin flushing an ugly, mottled red with sheer, unadulterated fury. The polished smile was entirely gone, replaced by a mask of humiliated rage.
"Are you insane?" Sabrina hissed, leaning forward in her chair, her voice pitching high and breathless with panic and anger. "You are humiliating me in front of our families! You are elevating a filthy servant to the table over a paper toy!"
Before Rafael could respond, a small, fragile voice broke the terrifying tableau.
Miles, sitting rigidly in his navy suit and burgundy bow tie, had been watching the entire exchange. The six-year-old boy slowly turned his head, bypassing his father's imposing figure, and looked directly at Sabrina.
The child’s eyes were wide and glistening, but he was fiercely holding back tears. He possessed the same dark, observant intelligence as his father. He looked at the woman in the emerald gown with a simple, wounded certainty that completely stripped away all of Sabrina’s aristocratic defenses.
"You broke Mommy's fingers for it," Miles said.
The childish words hit the room with the force of a physical blow. The absolute, unvarnished truth spoken from the mouth of the syndicate’s sole heir was a devastating verdict. It wasn't an accusation; it was a horrifying confirmation of facts.
"Shut your mouth, you little brat!" Sabrina shrieked, losing her composure entirely. She slammed her manicured hands down on the gold-rimmed porcelain, rattling the crystal glasses. "You don't know what you're talking about! She is not your mother! She is a maid! She is nothing!"
"He is my son," Rafael’s voice boomed, suddenly dropping into a terrifying, gravelly roar that rattled the crystal chandeliers. "And you will never raise your voice to him again."
The fifty guests recoiled physically. The polite, affluent conversation was a distant memory. Capos stationed around the room shifted uneasily, their hands resting near their concealed weapons. To openly challenge the fiancée of the boss was dangerous, but Sabrina had just screamed at the boss's heir. In the brutal world of the mafia, that was a fatal miscalculation.
"Rafael, darling, please," Sabrina gasped, realizing she had crossed a line she could not retreat from. "I was just trying to protect him! She is manipulating him! She wants your money, she wants your power, she wants to take my place!"
Miles ignored the screaming woman. He reached out from his chair, his small fingers gently touching Elodie’s uninjured arm.

Elodie instinctively wrapped her left arm around the boy, pulling him slightly closer to her fitted black dress, shielding him from Sabrina’s venomous panic. She held the repaired star tightly, tears finally spilling over her lower eyelids and tracking down her delicate, rosy cheeks.
Rafael watched the housemaid comfort his son, while her own hand throbbed with agony caused by the woman sitting to his left. The contrast between the two women was absolute. One offered unconditional, gentle love; the other offered only calculating cruelty. The choice had already been made.
