Chapter 9

There was one last recording from the day before Elena died.

This one was not a hidden capture of someone else. It was meant for me.

She sat in Sophie’s nursery with the cloth doll in her lap and a needle in her hand. Sophie babbled softly from her crib. Elena looked tired, but she smiled when she looked toward our daughter. Then she looked into the camera.

“If I’m wrong about everything, Massimo can laugh at me someday.”

I almost broke right there.

Then she opened the doll’s shoulder seam and slid the plastic-wrapped drive inside. After that she tucked the folded note in with it. She sewed the doll closed slowly, carefully, with the same hands that had held our daughter, touched my face, and tried for months to save me from what my own blood was becoming.

“Massimo,” she said, “if you’re watching this, I’m sorry.”

I shut my eyes for one second and listened.

“I should have told you sooner. But they were already teaching you not to believe me, and every time I tried, I could see them winning.”

That was the line that crushed me more than any revelation about my father or Bianca. Because it was true. I had watched her become more frightened and less certain I would stand with her, and I called it instability instead of recognizing betrayal at work around her.

Then Elena did the one thing I did not deserve.

She told me not to punish myself for that.

“I know you,” she said. “You’ll spend the rest of your life asking why you didn’t see it. So I’m answering now. Because people you loved lied well. That does not make their lies your fault.”

Bianca looked away on the terrace. Marco lowered his head.

Then Elena said what Sophie would need someday more than I did.

“And if Sophie is old enough to understand any of this, tell her I did not leave. I was trying to come home.”

When the recording ended, I could not speak for several seconds.

The drive had given me proof. It had given me names. It had given me the shape of the lie that stole my wife from me.

But more than any of that, it gave me the last words Elena chose for our family.

And not one of them was about revenge.
