Chapter 12

The senior capos gathered at noon.
I did not sit at the head of the table. I stood beside the laptop and played Elena’s recordings one by one. I wanted every man who still spoke the word family like a prayer to watch what my family had actually done.
Some of them had known pieces. None of them knew the whole thing.
When my father’s voice came through the speakers telling Bianca to bring Elena to the east house, three older men lowered their eyes at once. They had served Lorenzo for decades. Hearing him exposed after death shook them in a way I almost pitied.
Almost.
When Elena’s final message played, nobody spoke for a long moment afterward.
Then one old capo asked me the question I had been waiting for.
“What happens now?”
The old Bellaforte answer would have been obvious. Blood for blood. Erasure. Public fear. A performance of control brutal enough to make every man in the room grateful the violence stopped where I decided it would stop.
I understood that answer better than anyone there.
I rejected it anyway.
“Now,” I said, “we stop calling cruelty order.”
Nobody challenged me.
So I kept going.
I told them the east house would be destroyed. Every crew route or private structure that answered first to Lorenzo’s old loyalties rather than to Bellaforte discipline now answered to me or not at all. Any man who still believed wives and children were useful leverage rather than sacred lines had until sunset to leave my family and never return.
One of the oldest men at the table frowned and asked if I was making policy out of grief.
“No,” I told him. “I’m correcting policy built by men who confused fear with intelligence.”
That ended the debate.
Afterward, Marco asked for a moment alone. I refused. There would be no more private truths in my house. Not after Elena died inside them.
Bianca did not ask for anything. She sat in silence like a woman only just beginning to understand that the world she built her whole worth around had collapsed and that no one, not even me, was going to give her the clean emotional ending she wanted.

My father ruled by turning every room into a test of fear.
I had no intention of leaving that inheritance intact for Sophie.
