Chapter 13

A few days later, Marco came to me stripped of everything that once made him look important.
No family pin. No watch. No role.
He told me he was not asking for his place back. Good. He knew better. Then he said he wanted one thing only. Someday, when Sophie was older, he wanted her to know he tried to warn Elena.
I looked at him for a long time before answering.
“No.”
He accepted that faster than I expected. Maybe because he already knew my answer before he asked.
I told him he did not get to use one frightened, partial attempt at decency to erase all the cowardice that followed it. He warned Elena, yes. Then he let her leave that room still vulnerable, still hunted, still at the mercy of my father and my sister because confronting Lorenzo directly would have cost him too much.
Marco lowered his eyes and said he knew.
That honesty angered me more than excuses would have.
Before he left, he placed Elena’s wedding bracelet on the table between us. My hands went cold the second I saw it.
He told me Elena gave it to him at the east house in case she didn’t make it out. She thought if he ever found his spine, maybe he would bring it to me. He didn’t. He carried it for two years instead, because every day he waited made the truth harder to admit.
Another secret kept not for the dead, but for the coward.
I almost told him to take it away. Instead, I kept it.
Later that afternoon, I gave the bracelet to Sophie. She immediately tried to fasten it around the doll’s waist and looked at me for approval. I nodded. There was something unbearably right about that. Elena’s bracelet belonged to Elena’s daughter more than it belonged sealed in any vault I could build.
Sophie asked if Bunny could keep it safe.
“Yes,” I said.
And when she smiled, I understood something I had been too blind to see when Elena was alive.
Objects do not matter because they are expensive or symbolic.
They matter because love survives inside them when people don’t.
Bianca spent years believing that doll threatened her because of what it hid.
May you like
She was wrong.
The doll threatened her because Elena’s love outlived her control of the story.
