Chapter 6

The brilliant, cinematic sunlight felt blindingly harsh as Jessamine stared at the heavy legal document in her trembling hands. The crisp black ink on the pristine white paper seemed to blur and refocus, swimming before her eyes. The bright video colors of the party happening just feet away faded into a distant, muffled reality. Her fair, rosy complexion drained completely of blood, leaving her looking as pale as a ghost.

The first line of the document was not a letter. It was not a note of abandonment.

It was a bank transfer authorization.

The bold text at the top of the page read: CONFIDENTIAL SETTLEMENT AGREEMENT AND NON-DISCLOSURE DIRECTIVE.

Below that, the specific, terrifying detail that made Jessamine’s heart stop entirely: Recipient: Thomas Vance. Amount: $5,000,000. Authorized by: The Marcelline Trust.

Thomas was her husband. The man she had loved with every fiber of her being. The man who had kissed her forehead three years ago, kissed his sleeping infant son, and vanished off the face of the earth. The family had told her he was a coward who couldn't handle the pressure of fatherhood. They had told her he ran away with another woman.

But the document in her hands told a horrific, completely different story. Thomas hadn't abandoned them out of fear or lack of love. He had been paid off. Or worse, he had been forced to accept a payout under threat, funded directly by Marcelline’s personal trust account.

"What is this?" Jessamine whispered, her American accent cracking with a profound, earth-shattering horror. She looked up from the paper, her frightened eyes locking onto her sister-in-law. "What did you do to my husband?"

Marcelline’s cold smile remained perfectly fixed. She crossed her arms over her elegant fitted dress, completely unbothered by the revelation.

"I protected the family investments, Jessamine," Marcelline replied smoothly, her voice carrying a sickening, aristocratic entitlement. "Thomas was a liability. He was digging into the offshore accounts. He found out how my side of the family was funneling money from the primary estate. If he had gone to the authorities, we would have lost everything."

"You paid him to leave us?" Jessamine gasped, tears of sheer, agonizing betrayal spilling hot and fast down her rosy cheeks. "You paid the father of my child to walk away?!"

"He took the money, Jessamine," Marcelline sneered, stepping closer, twisting the knife deep into the open wound. "He took the five million dollars and he walked away. He chose the cash over you and your pathetic little boy. I just facilitated his true desires."

"No," Jessamine shook her head violently, the diamond on her wedding ring catching the bright light as she clutched the paper to her chest. "Thomas wouldn't do that. He loved us. He wouldn't leave Piers for money. You threatened him! What did you do to him?!"

"Keep your voice down," an older, male relative snapped, stepping forward from the crowd of guests. The man’s fair skin was flushed with anger. "You are embarrassing the family, Jessamine. Marcelline did what had to be done to protect our legacy."

Jessamine’s breath hitched. She looked around the sunlit patio. The faces of the White American relatives and family friends were no longer just shocked bystanders. Their expressions had hardened. The polite party clothing masked a deeply entrenched, sociopathic loyalty to the family's wealth.

They all knew.

Every single one of them standing on the patio had known for three years that her husband had been bought off or eliminated by Marcelline, and they had all sat around her at Thanksgiving dinners, smiling and offering her fake pity.

"You all knew," Jessamine breathed, stepping backward, pulling Piers tightly against her legs. "You are all monsters."
