Chapter 2

The bright, saturated colors of the outdoor kitchen area felt like a surreal backdrop to the nightmare unfolding near the grill. Jessamine approached from the blind spot of the heavy stone pillars, her breath catching in her throat as she witnessed the scene.

Marcelline’s elegant, manicured hand suddenly shot out. She grabbed Piers roughly by the back of his small, casual shirt. The four-year-old boy let out a tiny, breathless gasp as Marcelline forcefully pushed him forward, shoving his petite frame roughly into a hard metal patio chair.

"Sit there and don't move," Marcelline hissed, her American accent dripping with an undeniable, venomous malice.

Just inches away, sitting comfortably in a plush, cushioned chair, was Lily. Marcelline’s eight-year-old daughter looked the picture of contentment. Her fair, rosy skin glowed under the bright sunlight as she sat happily eating a perfectly cooked, juicy piece of grilled meat from a pristine porcelain plate.

Marcelline turned her back on her own daughter and stepped directly up to the smoking grill. She didn't reach for the fresh, sizzling burgers lined up neatly on the grate. Instead, she reached to the far, neglected corner of the grill. Using a pair of heavy steel tongs, Marcelline picked up a completely burned, charred, and smoking hamburger patty. It was nothing more than a puck of black ash.

She turned around and dropped the ruined, blackened meat onto a cheap paper plate. Beside the ruined burger, she tossed a piece of severely blackened, hard bread.

Marcelline walked over and slammed the paper plate down onto the table directly in front of Piers. The little boy flinched, his bright eyes wide with terror as he looked down at the inedible, charred food. He looked so small, so devastatingly fragile in the oversized metal chair.

"I don't like it," Piers whispered, his voice trembling so violently it was barely audible over the chatter of the nearby guests. "It smells bad, Auntie Marcelline."

Marcelline leaned over the table, bringing her fair, rosy face terrifyingly close to the four-year-old boy. The heavy diamond bracelet on her wrist clinked against the metal table. The natural, cinematic light offered no shadows to hide the absolute, sociopathic cruelty burning in her eyes.

"I did not ask for your opinion, you little brat," Marcelline sneered, her voice a low, threatening hiss designed to avoid the attention of the surrounding adults.

"Please," Piers whimpered, a single tear cutting a path down his rosy cheek. "My tummy hurts."

Marcelline’s eyes narrowed into dark, vicious slits. She grabbed the edge of the paper plate and shoved it forcefully into the boy's chest.

"Eat," Marcelline commanded, her voice laced with a cruel, undeniable threat. "Or starve again."

The words echoed in the bright, sunlit space, a horrifying testament to ongoing abuse. But before Marcelline could pull away, a sudden, explosive movement shattered the atmosphere. Jessamine broke cover. The beautiful, twenty-nine-year-old mother closed the final distance with the speed and ferocity of a protective lioness.

"Get your hands away from him!" Jessamine screamed.

She hurried over, completely disregarding the shocked gasps of the nearby guests. Without a fraction of a second of hesitation, Jessamine snatched the paper plate of burnt, blackened food right off the table. Utilizing every ounce of her maternal rage, she hurled the plate straight at Marcelline’s face.
