Chapter 3

The impact was immediate and explosive. The plate of ruined, charred food smashed directly into Marcelline’s fair, rosy face. The blackened hamburger crumbled into a cloud of greasy ash upon impact, while the heavy, blackened crust of the bread struck her sharply on the cheekbone.
"Ah!" Marcelline shrieked, her American accent pitching into a hysterical, high-pitched wail of sheer shock.
The force of the throw, combined with her precarious balance on her towering heels, caused Marcelline to stumble backward. Her elegant fitted dress twisted awkwardly as she lost her footing entirely. With a heavy, undignified thud, Marcelline fell hard onto the stone floor of the patio, her diamond bracelet scraping loudly against the pavement.
The entire outdoor kitchen area went dead silent. The bright, cinematic lighting illuminated the sudden, chaotic destruction of the family’s polite facade. White American guests in their party clothing froze, their wine glasses suspended in mid-air.
Jessamine stood towering over the fallen woman. Her chest heaved with rapid, furious breaths. Her beautiful, movie-star features were contorted into a mask of pure, unadulterated wrath. Her hands were curled into tight fists at her sides, shaking violently with a rage so profound it seemed to vibrate the very air around her.
"Are you insane, Jessamine?!" an older uncle shouted, breaking from the crowd and rushing forward. "You attacked her!"
"She was feeding my son garbage!" Jessamine roared back, not taking her eyes off Marcelline, who was groaning and wiping black ash from her pristine makeup.
"It was a mistake!" Marcelline stammered from the floor, her voice shaking with genuine panic as she realized her cruelty had been exposed. "I just grabbed the wrong plate off the grill! You are completely overreacting!"
"Don't you dare lie to me," Jessamine hissed, stepping closer to the fallen woman, the gold of her wedding ring flashing dangerously in the sunlight. "I heard exactly what you said to him."
Jessamine turned her furious gaze toward the table. Lily, the eight-year-old girl, had dropped her fork, staring at her aunt with wide, terrified eyes. But Jessamine wasn't looking at Lily; her mind was locked onto the horrifying, specific threat Marcelline had hissed at her four-year-old son.
“Again?” Jessamine demanded, her voice shaking with a terrifying, protective rage. She looked from Marcelline on the floor back to her trembling child. “What does she mean, again? How many times have you done this to him when I wasn't looking? How many times have you starved my baby?”
"You are acting like a hysterical lunatic!" Marcelline cried out, accepting a hand from a nearby cousin to help her stand up. "He is a picky eater! I was just trying to get him to eat his lunch!"
"Mommy..." a fragile, tiny voice broke through the shouting.

Piers scrambled out of the heavy metal chair. The petite, adorable boy ran as fast as his little legs could carry him and immediately hid behind Jessamine’s legs. He wrapped his small arms tightly around her jeans, burying his fair, rosy face into the fabric of her clothing.
"I've got you, baby. Mommy is right here. Nobody is ever going to hurt you again," Jessamine promised fiercely, dropping one hand to gently stroke the boy’s hair. "Tell me what she did, Piers. Tell Mommy everything."
