Chapter 1

The afternoon sun poured over the sprawling suburban estate, casting bright, vivid colors across the manicured lawns. The natural, cinematic lighting was pristine and crisp, entirely devoid of any muddy or yellow tint. The sky was an immaculate, piercing blue, reflecting off the surface of a massive swimming pool where crystal-clear water rippled gently in the summer breeze. Gathered across the patio and the vibrant green grass was a collection of White American relatives and family friends, all dressed in appropriately elegant party clothing. Laughter and the melodic hum of crisp American accents floated through the warm air. The attendees shared striking similarities; their skin tones were uniformly fair and rosy, glowing with health and privilege in the flawless daylight.

Jessamine moved through the crowd with an effortless, breathtaking grace. At twenty-nine years old, she was beautiful like a movie star. Her fair, rosy complexion was perfectly complemented by her simple yet stunning attire: a crisp, tailored blouse, dark fitted jeans, and sensible but stylish flats. Delicate earrings sparkled in the sunlight, but it was the heavy gold wedding ring on her left hand that caught the light most often as she nervously brushed a stray lock of hair behind her ear.

"Have you seen Piers?" Jessamine asked, her voice tight with a rising, inexplicable anxiety as she approached a group of chatting relatives.

"I think I saw him wandering toward the grill a few minutes ago, Jessamine," an older uncle replied, gesturing with his crystal glass of iced tea. "He was following the other kids. He’s such a quiet little thing, isn't he?"

"He's just shy," Jessamine replied defensively, her American accent clipping the ends of her words. "Thank you. I need to make sure he's eaten something."

"You worry too much, Jessamine," a cousin chimed in with a breezy laugh. "We are entirely surrounded by family. The boy is perfectly safe here. Relax and have a drink."

"I will relax when I have my son in my line of sight," Jessamine stated firmly, offering a tight, polite smile before turning away from the group.

She navigated through the sea of fair-skinned guests, her heart beating a slightly faster rhythm against her ribs. Four-year-old Piers was petite and adorable, possessing a fragility that naturally made others want to protect him. Since his father had vanished—a wound that remained agonizingly raw for Jessamine—Piers had become her entire world. She was hyper-aware of the subtle, condescending glances the extended family often threw their way. To them, she was the abandoned wife, the tragic charity case of the family tree.

As she rounded the corner of the massive stone patio, the bright, natural light illuminated the outdoor kitchen area. The smell of searing meat and charcoal hung heavily in the air. Jessamine’s sharp eyes scanned the space, bypassing the adults until she spotted a small figure standing near one of the heavy wrought-iron patio tables. It was Piers. But the relief that instantly washed over her was violently ripped away a second later as she saw who was standing beside him.

Marcelline.

At thirty-six years old, Marcelline was the undisputed matriarch of the younger generation. She wore an elegant fitted dress that hugged her frame perfectly, accessorized with heavy earrings, a diamond bracelet, and towering heels. Her fair, rosy skin was pulled taut over sharp, aristocratic cheekbones. As Jessamine watched from a distance, the cinematic lighting caught the cold, deeply cruel expression twisting Marcelline’s features as she looked down at the four-year-old boy. Jessamine’s protective instincts flared into a five-alarm fire. She quickened her pace, her flats striking the stone patio silently as she hurried to reach her son.
