Chapter 4

The tension on the sunlit patio was suffocating, a heavy, physical weight pressing down on the pristine gathering. The bright, cinematic colors of the backyard felt like a grotesque mockery of the dark, abusive reality that had just been exposed. The fair-skinned guests exchanged nervous, wide-eyed glances, completely unsure of how to navigate the sudden, violent rupture in their family dynamic.

Piers peeked out from behind the safety of Jessamine’s legs. His bright, innocent eyes were filled with unshed tears. He looked at Marcelline, who was furiously trying to brush the black ash from her elegant fitted dress, and then he looked up at his mother.

"I was so hungry, Mommy," Piers whispered, his voice trembling so violently it broke Jessamine’s heart into a thousand pieces.

"I know, sweetie. I'm going to get you something good to eat right now," Jessamine soothed, glaring daggers at the surrounding relatives who had stood by and watched the abuse.

Piers shook his head slowly. He raised a tiny, shaking finger and pointed toward the heavy, white plastic cooler shoved deep beneath the serving table.

"Her kids got the food," Piers said, his American accent tiny and heartbreakingly clear in the silent space. He looked down at the ruined, blackened burger scattered across the stone floor. "Burnt pieces for me."

Jessamine’s brow furrowed. She looked at the cooler beneath the table. The catering spread on the tables was extravagant, featuring salads, fresh fruits, and perfectly grilled meats. Why would Piers be pointing at a hidden cooler?

"What is he talking about, Marcelline?" Jessamine demanded, her voice dropping into a dangerous, lethal register.

"The boy has an active imagination," Marcelline sneered, though her fair, rosy skin suddenly paled significantly. She took a frantic step toward the table. "It's just extra ice and drinks in there. Leave it alone, Jessamine. You have caused enough of a scene today."

The sheer panic in Marcelline’s eyes was the only confirmation Jessamine needed.

"Stay behind me, Piers," Jessamine instructed softly.

She stepped forward, completely ignoring Marcelline’s protests. Jessamine dropped to one knee on the stone patio and reached under the table with the pristine white tablecloth. She grabbed the handle of the heavy cooler and dragged it forcefully out into the bright, natural light.

"I said leave it alone!" Marcelline shouted, her voice pitching into a hysterical shriek.

Jessamine flipped the heavy plastic latches and threw the lid of the cooler open.

The cinematic lighting flooded the interior of the cooler. It was not filled with ice or drinks. Packed neatly inside were several high-end, fresh, gourmet meals in sealed plastic containers. They were perfectly prepared children’s meals—macaroni and cheese, fresh fruit slices, and beautifully cooked chicken tenders. The meals were explicitly labeled with the names of Marcelline's children, including Lily.

"Fresh meals," Jessamine whispered, the reality of the systemic, calculated cruelty washing over her. "You brought private, gourmet food for your own children, and you purposefully fed my son garbage from the grill."

"He doesn't appreciate good food!" Marcelline argued defensively, her aristocratic facade entirely crumbling. "Why should I waste expensive catering on a child who doesn't even belong in this family?"

Jessamine’s hands shook with rage as she pushed the fresh meals aside to investigate the rest of the cooler. As she moved a plastic container of grapes, her fingers brushed against something completely out of place. Hidden underneath the fresh meals, lying flat against the ice packs at the bottom of the cooler, was a thick, folded manila envelope.
