Chapter 4

Grace refused to explain in the gallery.

She said too many people were watching.

For once, I agreed with her.

We cleared the guests.

Family stayed.

Capos stayed.

Caleb stayed long enough to confirm the mechanics, then left under escort after giving us every detail he knew.

Nina went upstairs with her nanny and two guards.

She did not want to leave me.

I promised I would come when the room stopped being stupid.

That made her laugh.

Good.

Then Grace sat opposite Vera.

No sculptures above them this time.

Just two old leather chairs.

“What happened thirty years ago?”

My mother looked at me.

“Your father had not been chosen yet.”

I knew that.

My grandfather had two possible successors.

My father, Matteo.

And Vera’s father, Carlo.

Brothers.

Carlo was older.

Matteo was calmer.

The family split.

I knew the official history.

Carlo stepped aside voluntarily after a heart problem.

Grace laughed when I repeated that.

“Voluntarily.”

Vera’s eyes hardened.

There.

Not history.

Story.

“What actually happened?”

Grace looked toward her cousin.

“Carlo had a panic attack during a family confrontation.”

Vera stood.

“You humiliated him.”

“I told the truth.”

“You told everyone he froze.”

“He did.”

“And Matteo got the chair.”

Grace did not deny it.

I understood slowly.

My mother had helped turn one moment of fear into a succession argument.

Exactly what Vera tried to do to me tonight.

Make the family watch.

Force a reaction.

Define the reaction afterward.

I looked at Grace.

“You built the original test.”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“But I used it.”

That distinction did not absolve her.

Good.

Vera laughed bitterly.

“My father spent the rest of his life believing one bad minute made him less of a man.”

Grace looked down.

For the first time, shame.

“He died believing your husband stole his place.”

Vera continued.

“And you sat beside Matteo for twenty-seven years acting like it was wisdom.”

There.

The old wound.

The choice spectacle had history.

Not a tradition.

A revenge.

May you like

Vera wanted Grace to watch her son face the same kind of public judgment that destroyed Vera’s father.

Only this time, she put a four-year-old girl in the second chair.
