Chapter 15

Grace gave me Carlo’s old ring.
I had never seen it before.
Plain gold.
Heavy.
“Why do you have this?”
“He gave it to your father the year before he died.”
Interesting.
“Why?”
Grace smiled sadly.
“Because despite everything, he loved his brother.”
That complicated the clean version of history.
Good.
Families are rarely kind enough to make resentment total.
Carlo resented Matteo.
Loved him.
Felt humiliated by Grace.
Still attended birthdays.
Still sent gifts.
Still carried a wound nobody repaired.
Vera inherited the wound because adults narrated it around her until it became identity.
Grace looked at the ring.
“I kept thinking if I admitted what we did to him was wrong, I would be saying Matteo should never have led.”
“No.”
I understood immediately.
“Two things.”
She nodded.
“Exactly.”
Matteo may still have been the stronger successor.
Carlo still deserved dignity.
Recognizing one did not erase the other.
That seemed obvious now.
Apparently it took thirty years, two falling sculptures, and a terrified child for the family to learn it.
I gave the ring to Vera.
Not as inheritance.
Not as apology from Grace.
Just history returned to the daughter who should have had it.
She cried.
Quietly.
Then put it in her pocket.
May you like
She did not wear it.
I liked that.
