Chapter 4

The opulent grand salon was suffocatingly quiet. The ivory candles burning in their polished brass candelabras seemed to cast harsh, judgmental shadows over Camille’s emerald evening gown. The polished, reassuring smile that usually charmed the syndicate members had completely evaporated the warmth from the room, leaving behind a feral mask of aristocratic entitlement and cornered panic.

Mara could not bear to look at the woman who had just erased her mother's memory. She lowered her gaze, staring blindly down at the torn teddy bear clutched against her rumpled white apron. The tears finally spilled over, tracing silent, agonizing paths down her fair, rosy cheeks. The profound vulnerability of her posture stood in stark contrast to the heavily armed, ruthless criminals surrounding her.

Seeing her beloved caretaker weeping, six-year-old Poppy moved without hesitation. The little girl stepped forward in her cream Christmas dress, entirely ignoring the terrifying tension radiating from her father. Poppy’s small, fair hand entered the frame, reaching out with a heartbreaking, innocent desperation to offer comfort. She gently took hold of Mara’s trembling hand.

Mara let out a soft, shuddering breath. Slowly, instinctively seeking the pure, unconditional love the child offered, Mara’s fingers slowly closed around Poppy’s tiny fingers. They held on to each other, a fragile sanctuary of grief and love standing amidst a den of vipers.

Reid watched the exchange between his daughter and the maid. His sharp, angular jaw tightened slightly, the muscles ticking beneath his very short stubble. The absolute cruelty of Camille's action was staggering. She had tortured a helpless member of his staff and deeply traumatized his own daughter merely to satisfy her own shallow vanity and jealousy.

Moving with a profound, terrifying calm, Reid stepped smoothly into the space, positioning his broad, masculine body deliberately between Camille and Mara. It was a physical shield, an unmistakable declaration of absolute protection that stripped away Camille's authority in a single, fluid movement.

He did not raise his hand to strike his fiancée. He did something far more intimate and far more dangerous. Reid reached out and rested his heavily tattooed hand lightly against Mara’s shoulder. The heat of his palm bled through the fabric of her fitted black maid dress, offering her the undeniable, absolute protection of the syndicate boss.

Reid did not look at Mara. He held a cold, unwavering stare, locking his dark eyes directly onto Camille.

Under the weight of that lethal, promising stare, Camille’s manufactured smile completely disappeared. The color drained from her face as she realized her meticulously crafted social standing had just been obliterated.

Behind Reid’s imposing, protective silhouette, Mara continued to hold the ruined bear, her hand tightly intertwined with Poppy's. They stayed incredibly close together beneath the warm, glowing lights of the towering Christmas tree, anchored in the storm by the unwavering strength of the man standing between them and the monster in the emerald gown.
