Chapter 2

The ambient hum of the crowded Christmas reception flowed seamlessly around the room, masking the quiet, desperate terror radiating from the young maid. The clinking of crystal glasses and the soft scraping of polished shoes continued across the vast salon, but near the carved marble fireplace, a profound, innocent tragedy was rapidly unfolding. The warm golden light cascading from the crystal chandeliers highlighted the sudden, suffocating tension that gripped Mara as she finally located the child she was looking for.

Six-year-old Poppy Ashford stood dangerously close to the crackling hearth. Dressed impeccably in a beautiful cream Christmas dress, the little girl was clutching a small toy Santa in her hands. Her fair, rosy cheeks were flushed from the heat of the flames. She was staring intently into the fire, entirely oblivious to the dangerous syndicate politics and the heavily armed guests swirling around her in the grand salon.

Mara stopped directly beside the fireplace, her knuckles turning white as she gripped the torn, ruined fabric of her cherished teddy bear. Inside the roaring fire, resting among the glowing, burning logs, was a small, melting plastic sound module. It crackled and hissed as the flames consumed it, destroying the fragile circuitry and the irreplaceable audio file trapped within.

Poppy looked up as Camille approached the fireplace, an empty champagne flute in her hand. The little girl looked earnestly at her future stepmother, her young face completely devoid of malice, carrying only an innocent, devastating hope. She raised the small toy Santa toward the woman in the emerald gown.

"Auntie, can Santa unburn Mommy’s song?" Poppy asked, her young American accent ringing clearly over the sound of the crackling fire.

The words dropped into the immediate vicinity like a live explosive charge. The child’s innocent use of the word "Mommy" to refer to the maid was the very catalyst that had ignited Camille's sociopathic jealousy.

Mara pressed the torn, ruined bear gently against her chest, her heart shattering into a thousand irreparable pieces. That bear was her most prized possession. The module burning in the fire contained a recording of her late mother singing a lullaby—the only audio recording of her mother’s voice that existed in the world. She had played it for Poppy every night to soothe the little girl to sleep.

Mara looked away from the fire and turned her gaze toward Reid, who was standing just a few feet away, mid-conversation with his capos. Moisture gathered heavily along Mara’s lower eyelids, making her expressive eyes shine brilliantly in the golden light. She steadied a trembling breath, her chest rising and falling rapidly against her rumpled white apron.

"My mother’s last lullaby," Mara whispered, her voice incredibly quiet, yet carrying a devastating, undeniable agony that sliced through the ambient noise of the room. "My only recording."

The sheer heartbreak in her voice was absolute. The plastic module popped loudly in the fireplace, a final, sickening sound that signaled the permanent erasure of her mother's memory, orchestrated entirely out of spite by the woman smiling beside the flames.
