Chapter 3

The realization that a monstrous act of cruelty had just occurred radiated outward from Reid Ashford like a physical shockwave. The sheer, masculine power emanating from his broad shoulders was intoxicating and terrifying all at once. The clinking of fine porcelain ceased entirely within his immediate radius, the silence spreading down the long grand salon until it consumed the entire space. One by one, every single dinner guest stopped eating and speaking. Fifty of the most dangerous men and women in the city turned their heads, all staring toward the carved marble fireplace.
Reid did not look at the elite guests, nor did he immediately look at his polished fiancée standing by the hearth. He slowly turned his broad shoulders, casting a formidable shadow over the burgundy velvet sofas. He stopped directly beside Mara, his towering frame offering an immediate, physical anchor in the chaotic room.
He looked down at the trembling maid, taking in the dark, puffy shadows of her gathering tears, the crooked white ruffled headband, and the sheer devastation vibrating through her delicate frame. He looked at the torn teddy bear crushed against her chest, and then at the melting plastic in the fire. The pieces of the horrifying puzzle snapped together in his mind with lethal clarity.
Reid slowly shifted his dark, intense gaze, locking it directly onto Camille.
The cold, unyielding armor he wore as the mafia boss slipped for a fraction of a second, revealing a profound, dangerous fury. The artistic negative-space tattoos on his hands flexed as he rested them at his sides. The evening was no longer a Christmas celebration; it was a tribunal, and the apex predator of the city had just recognized the threat in his own home.
"Camille," Reid said. His voice was deep, slow, and incredibly low, delivered with a terrifying, controlled pause that shook the very foundation of the room. "You burned it?"
The question hung in the bright, luminous air, demanding an answer that would dictate the survival of everyone standing near the fireplace. The entire syndicate was staring at the fiancée. Capos shifted uncomfortably on the velvet sofas. No one dared to breathe too loudly.
Camille stood frozen for a microscopic second. Her eyes briefly, almost imperceptibly, flicked toward the roaring fireplace, a micro-expression of calculated defiance flashing across her face before she forced her gaze back to meet Reid’s intense, burning stare.
A reassuring, polished smile appeared on her lips, arriving a fraction too late, failing entirely to reach the coldness in her eyes. She believed her status as the daughter of a powerful allied family made her completely untouchable.

"The crying was spoiling my Christmas," Camille stated clearly, her American accent dripping with a manufactured, icy pragmatism.
The words dropped onto the polished marble floor like toxic acid. A collective, audible gasp erupted from the surrounding guests. The murmurs of the elite syndicate members died instantly. The room was suddenly paralyzed. The woman destined to be the queen of the Ashford syndicate had just publicly admitted to destroying a priceless, irreplaceable family memento out of sheer, petty malice, brushing it off as a mundane inconvenience.
