Chapter 9

“You bitch!” Kevin roared, lunging up the final two stairs toward Claire, his fists raised in blind rage.
Claire didn't flinch. She simply raised her phone, the screen glowing brightly in her hand. “I’m already on a live call with my attorney, Kevin. And the security cameras in the hallway are recording everything. Take one more step, and I will add felony assault to the federal racketeering charges you are about to face.”
Kevin froze mid-stride, his chest heaving, his fair skin turning a deep, dangerous purple. He looked up at the small glass dome of the security camera mounted in the ceiling corner, suddenly realizing how thoroughly they had been outplayed.
“You can’t do this to us, Claire,” Grant pleaded, his voice breaking into a pathetic whine. He held his hands up in a gesture of surrender. “We’re family. Noah is my son!”
“You gave up the right to call him your son yesterday,” Claire said, her voice dripping with disgust. “When you stood on that patio and allowed your brother and your father to humiliate an eight-year-old boy. When you conspired to steal him from me just to protect your stolen money.”
“I didn't want to do it!” Grant cried, tears actually forming in his eyes. “My dad made me! He said we needed leverage!”
“Dad, stop it!” Madison shrieked, totally humiliated by her father’s groveling. “Don't beg her!”
“You are going to have to learn how to beg, Madison,” Claire said, looking the teenager straight in the eyes. “Because as of this morning, your trust fund is gone. The house is going into foreclosure. The cars will be repossessed. You wanted to ruin a little boy’s wish over a bucket of mud? Congratulations. You ruined your entire life.”
Madison covered her face with her hands and burst into hysterical, hyperventilating sobs, sliding down the wall until she hit the floor. The cruel, mocking bully from yesterday was entirely broken, reduced to a terrified child facing the consequences of her own malice.

“What do you want, Claire?” Kevin asked, his voice defeated, his shoulders slumping in surrender. “What is the price to stop the audit?”
“There is no price,” Claire said, turning away from them and walking back toward the master bedroom. “I don't negotiate with criminals.”
