Chapter 5

The house was suffocatingly quiet once Grant retreated downstairs. Claire ordered the cake, dried Noah off, and settled him into her large bed with his favorite cartoon playing on the television. Once he was asleep, his chest rising and falling in peaceful rhythm, Claire slipped out of the room.
She needed her laptop. She needed to start pulling the financial files before Grant could warn his father and brother.
She tiptoed down the back staircase, avoiding the squeaky step near the landing. As she reached the ground floor, she heard hushed, urgent voices drifting through the cracked sliding glass door that led to the patio. It was dark outside now, but the patio lights were still on.
Claire pressed herself against the wall, listening carefully.
“She’s bluffing,” Kevin was saying, his voice tight with anxiety. “She can’t lock the trust. The board wouldn't allow it.”
“She is the board, Kevin!” Grant hissed in a frantic whisper. “She has controlling shares. If she opens those ledgers, we are all going to federal prison. Dad’s shell companies are entirely tied to the tuition accounts!”
Claire’s heart skipped a beat. Shell companies? She knew Grandpa Whitmore was terrible with money, but she had never looked deep enough into the secondary accounts to suspect fraud.
“Then we have to accelerate the plan,” Grandpa’s gravelly voice joined the conversation. “We can't wait for the divorce to go through the courts. We need her out of the house, and we need the boy.”
“How are we supposed to get full custody of Noah now?” Madison’s voice whined, sounding terrified and angry. “She hates me! She’s going to ruin my life, Grandpa!”
“Shut up, Madison,” Kevin snapped. “You played your part perfectly today. We needed her to snap in front of witnesses. We needed her to look unstable and violent.”
Claire covered her mouth with her hand, her eyes widening in absolute horror. The mud. The ruined cake. It hadn't just been a cruel teenage prank. It was a calculated setup.
“Half the neighborhood saw her assault a minor,” Grandpa chuckled darkly. “Grant, you file the police report in the morning. We claim she’s been physically abusive to Madison for months. We get a restraining order, force her out of the house, and take primary custody of Noah.”
“And once we have the kid,” Kevin added, his voice dripping with malice, “she’ll sign whatever financial non-disclosure agreements we want just to get visitation rights. She’ll hand over the trust to keep the boy.”
“Are you sure the cops will believe us?” Grant asked nervously.
May you like
“I have three buddies on the force, Grant,” Kevin sneered. “Plus, we have twenty guests who saw her slap your daughter. Claire is entirely trapped. By tomorrow night, she’ll be sitting in a jail cell, and we’ll have the keys to the kingdom.”
Claire backed away from the sliding door, her hands trembling violently. They weren't just trying to bully her; they were trying to steal her son and frame her for a crime to cover up their own financial rot.
