Chapter 3

Emma had been recording for eleven days.

That changed everything.

Not because the abuse lasted eleven days.

Because it had been happening longer.

Emma only started filming after she understood the pattern.

“She waits until you leave.”

I looked at her.

“For council?”

“Yes.”

“For meetings?”

“Yes.”

“Anything else?”

“Sometimes when Mr. Marcus comes.”

Marcus laughed.

“This is ridiculous.”

Emma flinched.

I noticed.

“Why does he scare you?”

She hesitated.

“Because he knows where my mother lives.”

The room went still.

Marcus’s face changed.

Small.

Enough.

I turned toward him.

“You threatened her family.”

“No.”

Emma spoke before he could finish.

“He said accidents happen to people who misunderstand private household matters.”

There it was.

Not direct enough to repeat easily.

Clear enough to work.

I looked at Emma.

“What made you start recording?”

She swallowed.

“Lucy stopped asking for breakfast.”

My chest tightened.

“She would hide under the hallway table when Miss Bianca came downstairs.”

I stared toward the staircase.

I had seen Lucy under that table twice.

I thought she was playing.

That memory hurt.

Emma continued.

“Then Miss Bianca told staff Lucy had a food issue.”

Of course.

Cause the fear.

Name the symptom.

Use the symptom later.

“How many staff knew?”

“Some saw pieces.”

“Why didn’t anyone tell me?”

Emma looked ashamed.

“Because Bianca said you knew.”

I closed my eyes briefly.

The oldest weapon in powerful houses.

Borrow the boss’s authority.

Nobody verifies because verification itself feels disloyal.

“What exactly did she say?”

“That you agreed Lucy needed harder discipline.”

I opened my eyes.

Bianca stared at me without apology.

I spoke slowly.

“You used my name.”

“You’re her father.”

“No.”

My voice dropped.

“You used my absence.”

That distinction mattered.

I had not authorized anything.

But I had built a house where people assumed authority flowed through proximity to me.

Bianca exploited that.

Marcus enforced it.

Emma broke it with a phone.

The weakest person in the room had become the only one documenting the truth.
