Chapter 10

Emma tried to resign.

Of course she did.

People who survive threats often want distance once danger is exposed.

I found her packing in the staff wing.

“Why?”

She looked embarrassed.

“I caused all this.”

“No.”

“You were getting married.”

“No.”

“Sir—”

“Vittorio.”

She stopped.

“Bianca caused this.”

Silence.

“Marcus helped.”

I paused.

“You recorded it.”

She looked at the suitcase.

“I should have told you sooner.”

“Yes.”

That surprised her.

I continued.

“But I built a house where telling me felt dangerous.”

Her eyes lifted.

“That belongs to me.”

She looked close to tears.

I hated that.

Not because emotion bothered me.

Because gratitude should not become pressure.

“Do you want to leave?”

She hesitated.

“I don’t know.”

“Then don’t decide today.”

That was all.

No promise.

No debt.

No “you’re family now.”

Those phrases sound kind when powerful people say them.

They can become cages.

Emma stayed another week.

Then another.

Eventually she agreed to remain under new conditions.

Staff could report directly to security.

No household member could fire someone without review.

No private discipline of Lucy by anyone but me or a professional caregiver with clear boundaries.

Simple things.

Things I should have built earlier.

Bianca had ruled through ambiguity.

Who had authority?

Who could question?

Who could approach me?

Ambiguity always helps the cruelest person in the room.

So I removed it.

The house became less elegant.

More procedural.

Good.

Safety sometimes looks boring.
