Chapter 1

“Enjoy your last meal.”

I placed the dog bowl directly in front of Bianca.

She stared at it.

Then at me.

The fear in her face appeared before the anger.

That mattered.

Lucy was behind me with Emma, wrapped around the housekeeper’s waist as though letting go would make the room dangerous again. Marcus was still half-buried beneath the broken antique map rack, swearing while my bodyguards moved toward him.

I did not look at my fiancée first.

I looked at my daughter.

Filthy dress.

Tangled hair.

Red eyes.

Three years old.

“Lucy.”

She looked up.

“How many times?”

Her mouth trembled.

Bianca immediately spoke.

“She doesn’t understand what you’re asking.”

I turned my head.

“Neither did I ask you.”

Silence.

Lucy held up two fingers.

Then another.

Three.

My chest went cold.

“Three times today?”

She shook her head.

Emma closed her eyes.

I understood before either of them spoke.

Three days.

Maybe more.

I crouched.

“What happens when Daddy leaves for meetings?”

Lucy whispered:

“I have to learn.”

“Learn what?”

She looked toward the dog bowl.

“To be good.”

Bianca laughed nervously.

“You’re letting a toddler describe discipline.”

I rose.

“No.”

My voice stayed low.

“I’m letting my daughter describe your behavior.”

Emma held out the phone again.

“There are more videos.”

Bianca stopped breathing.

Not one recording.

More.

I looked at her.

“How many?”

Emma swallowed.

“Five.”

Marcus cursed from the floor.

Bianca turned toward him too quickly.

That reaction told me the recordings were not only about cruelty.

Something else had been captured.

I took the phone.

Emma’s hands were shaking.

“Which video scares them most?”

She hesitated.

Then opened the final file.

Bianca’s voice played first.

Then Marcus’s.

And in the background, I heard my daughter crying while my fiancée said:

“Once Vittorio believes the child is uncontrollable, everything else becomes easy.”

The dog bowl was not punishment.

It was preparation.
