Chapter 7

The grand dining room, with its gold-rimmed porcelain and white roses, abruptly transformed from a place of celebration into a war room. The flickering tall candles cast long, jagged shadows against the ivory-paneled walls as Marcus gripped his weapon, waiting for orders.
"Are the perimeter guards fully armed?" Dorian asked, stepping away from Esme and Caleb to face his underboss. His tailored suit shifted effortlessly with his broad shoulders, his posture instantly transitioning into that of a wartime general.
"Every man is heavily armed and on the walls, Boss," Marcus replied, his scarred face tight with tension. "But Vale is throwing everything he has at us. He considers the broken engagement a massive insult to his family's honor. He wants blood tonight."
"Does he truly believe his honor is worth the destruction of his empire?" Dorian inquired quietly, casually checking the polished wristwatch on his arm.
"He's furious, Dorian. They are going to hit the mansion first. We need to move you to the safe room immediately," Marcus urged.
Esme scrambled to her feet, her slender frame shaking. She grabbed Caleb’s small hand, pulling the boy securely against the side of her black maid dress. The reality of the mafia underworld—the violence she had always known existed but had never seen—was suddenly crashing through the front doors.
"Mr. Whitlock," Esme stammered, her heart-shaped face pale with terror. "I... I should take Caleb upstairs. We need to hide."
Dorian slowly turned his head, his cold, observant eyes settling on the panicked housemaid and his trembling son.
"Do you believe the upstairs corridors will be safe when the windows shatter, Esme?" Dorian asked.
"I don't know where else to go!" Esme admitted, a frantic edge creeping into her voice. "I am just a maid! I don't know how to survive this!"
"Will you trust me to keep you alive?" Dorian asked, closing the distance between them in two long strides. He stopped mere inches from her, his towering masculine presence entirely engulfing her field of vision.
Esme looked up into his angular face. The extremely short, neatly trimmed stubble on his jawline twitched. Despite the imminent threat of heavily armed men marching on the estate, Dorian emanated a profound, terrifying calm.
"I trust you," Esme whispered, the words escaping her lips before she could even process them.
"Marcus, are the subterranean vaults completely sealed?" Dorian asked, without taking his eyes off Esme.
"Yes, sir. Food, water, and reinforced steel. It will hold against a siege," Marcus confirmed.
"Will you escort them down and stand guard at the heavy door?" Dorian asked, finally looking back at his underboss.
Marcus frowned deeply. "Boss, you need to be in that vault too. If Vale's men breach the house—"
"Do you question my orders, Marcus?" Dorian asked, his deep voice dropping to an absolute, freezing zero.
"No, sir," Marcus swallowed hard, immediately stepping toward Esme and the boy. "Come with me, miss. Quickly."
Esme gripped Caleb’s hand tightly. As she turned to follow the underboss, she looked back over her shoulder. Dorian was already walking toward the main foyer, removing his suit jacket, preparing to face an army alone in his gilded halls.
"Are you not coming with us?" Esme cried out, unable to stop herself.

Dorian paused, looking back at her. The small artistic neck tattoo caught the light of the chandeliers.
"Did you think I would hide while someone threatens what is mine?" Dorian asked.
