Chapter 4

The golden light from the cascading crystal chandeliers felt suddenly harsh and exposing. Dorian stood with Caleb resting on his hip, an impenetrable fortress of dark wool and quiet fury. Esme remained frozen a half-step behind him, her hands still clutching her white apron, utterly paralyzed by the sheer magnitude of what she had just unleashed.
"Are all of you waiting for a formal invitation to leave my home?" Dorian asked, shifting his cold, observant eyes from his trembling fiancée to the dozens of elite guests seated around the polished walnut tables.
The question was spoken softly, but it cracked like a whip. The sudden scraping of heavy velvet chairs against the marble floor echoed like thunder. The city’s most dangerous politicians, capos, and socialites stood in synchronized panic. They abandoned their white roses and gold-rimmed porcelain, filing rapidly toward the heavy silk curtains that led to the exit. Nobody spoke a word. In less than two minutes, the grand dining hall was entirely empty, save for the four of them.
Lucinda pushed her chair back, the sculpted satin of her evening gown rustling violently. She stood up, her fair skin flushed with a mixture of profound embarrassment and rising, desperate anger.
"Are you truly going to humiliate me in front of the entire commission over a servant's lie?" Lucinda demanded, pointing a manicured finger at Esme. "She manipulated him, Dorian! She handed Caleb the coins and told him to come to me! She is trying to ruin our wedding!"
Dorian did not look at Esme. His gaze remained locked on Lucinda, his jaw a sharp, unyielding line. He gently patted Caleb’s back, soothing the frightened boy.
"Do you take me for a fool, Lucinda?" Dorian asked quietly.
"I take you for a man who is being played by a jealous maid!" Lucinda shrieked, losing her aristocratic veneer completely. "Look at her! Look at the way she dresses, the way she hovers around you! She wants my ring, Dorian! Are you going to throw away the Vale family alliance because this little rat spun a fairy tale?"
Esme shrank back, her heart-shaped face turning pale. "I didn't... I swear, Mr. Whitlock, I would never—"
"Did I ask for your defense, Esme?" Dorian asked, cutting her off, though his tone was devoid of the venom he directed at his fiancée. It was a simple command to let him handle the execution.
He turned his full, devastating attention back to the woman wearing his diamonds.
"Did you think I would not eventually notice the fear in my son's eyes when you entered a room?" Dorian inquired, taking a single, slow step toward Lucinda. "Did you truly believe you could extort the heir to my empire and face no consequences?"
"It was a game!" Lucinda sobbed, real tears of panic finally spilling over her lashes. "I was trying to teach him discipline! You are always working, Dorian! I was trying to be a mother to him!"

"Is emotional extortion your definition of motherhood?" Dorian asked, his deep voice dropping to a terrifying whisper. "Do you think a woman who taxes a child for a father's embrace will ever bear the Whitlock name?"
Lucinda stumbled backward, her heel catching on the thick rug. She realized, with sudden, crushing clarity, that this was not a lover's quarrel. It was an excommunication. The engagement was over, and with it, her safety.
