Chapter 1

The cascading crystal chandeliers cast a warm, golden light across the gilded ceiling moldings and ivory-paneled walls of the Whitlock estate, bathing the grand dining room in an aura of untouchable wealth. It was an engagement dinner meant to unify two of the most powerful families in the city, but beneath the opulent surface, a quiet tension hummed. Tall candles glowed fiercely in heavy silver candelabras, their flames dancing among arrangements of pristine white roses, crystal glasses, and gold-rimmed porcelain. Men in dark suits and women in diamonds sat in champagne velvet chairs, completely oblivious to the silent tragedy unfolding near the head of the polished walnut table.

Esme Rowe moved through the heavy silk curtains and into the dining room, her slender, graceful proportions moving with the practiced invisibility of a seasoned housemaid. She wore a sophisticated black maid dress with a cinched waist and a fitted silhouette, the short A-line skirt brushing just above her knees. Her neatly tied white apron, crisp white collar, and cuffs stood in stark contrast to her softly heart-shaped face. Her hair was pinned into a flawless, neat low chignon, highlighting her delicate cheekbones and expressive brows. Yet, tonight, those brows were drawn tight with a heavy, unspoken anxiety.

"More champagne, Senator?" Esme asked softly, keeping her voice barely above a whisper as she poured for a guest.

"Yes, thank you, my dear," the Senator replied without glancing up from his conversation. "As I was saying, the Whitlock family's new alliance will secure the ports for the next decade. Lucinda is a remarkable match for him."

Esme’s gaze involuntarily drifted toward the head of the table. Lucinda Vale sat there, radiant and terrifying in a sculpted satin evening gown. Diamond earrings glittered at her neck, matching the massive engagement ring on her finger. She possessed a cruel, calculating nature that she masked beneath a veneer of aristocratic grace. Esme had seen the truth of her over the past month. She had seen the way Lucinda cornered the boss’s six-year-old son in the hallways, whispering vicious rules disguised as playful lessons in manners.

Standing nearby was Dorian Whitlock, the reigning architect of the city’s underworld. Handsome as a movie star, Dorian possessed a deeply masculine presence, with powerful shoulders and a tailored dark three-piece suit that fit him like armor. His angular face, high-bridged nose, and sharply defined jaw were framed by extremely short, neatly trimmed stubble. His thick, slightly wavy hair was swept back naturally, though a few loose strands fell carelessly over his forehead. He wore a heavy family signet ring and a polished wristwatch, his refined hand tattoos spaced generously across his skin. A small artistic tattoo peeked above his collar. His cold, observant eyes scanned the room, missing absolutely nothing.

"Excuse me, miss," a tiny, tremulous voice whispered near Esme’s waist.

Esme looked down. Caleb Whitlock, Dorian’s young son, stood clutching the fabric of his formal dinner jacket. He wore a crisp white shirt and polished shoes, looking like a miniature version of his formidable father. But his small hands were balled into tight fists, and his lower lip trembled.

"Caleb, sweetheart," Esme whispered, crouching slightly so she was at his eye level. "Are you alright? Do you need something to eat?"

"I need to see my dad," Caleb murmured, his voice laced with a quiet, desperate sadness. "I have enough this time. I counted it twice."

Esme’s heart shattered against her ribs. She knew exactly what he was talking about. She had discovered Lucinda’s twisted game weeks ago—the woman demanded money from the child's piggy bank whenever Caleb wanted to approach his own father. Esme had struggled to speak up, terrified of being dismissed and leaving the boy completely unprotected.

"Are you sure you want to do this right now, Caleb?" Esme asked gently, her eyes darting nervously toward Lucinda.

"I have to," Caleb said, uncurling his small fist just enough for Esme to see the shiny coins pressed into his sweaty palm. "I missed him all day."
