Chapter 11

Lucille asked to apologize to Daisy.

I said no.

Six months later, Daisy asked:

“Lucille still mean?”

“I don’t know.”

“Can ask?”

Children.

We arranged a short meeting.

Lucille wore no diamonds.

Interesting.

Maybe intentional.

She crouched.

“I put that sign on you.”

Daisy nodded.

“I said something horrible.”

Another nod.

“I locked you in the dressing room.”

Daisy’s face changed.

Lucille continued.

“I was wrong.”

Daisy asked:

“Why you call stray?”

Lucille took too long.

Then:

“Because I wanted you to feel like you didn’t belong.”

There.

Daisy frowned.

“But I do.”

“Yes.”

That answer broke Lucille.

Good.

No hug.

May you like

No forgiveness demanded.

Daisy went to play.
