Chapter 10

Arthur became more than a butler after that.
Not guardian.
Not replacement parent.
Something more valuable.
A person Daisy trusted.
He taught her how to polish silver badly.
Let her “inspect” breakfast.
Read terrible princess books while pretending not to enjoy them.
I once told him:
“You saved her.”
He shook his head.
“No, sir.”
Then:
“I recorded what I should have stopped sooner.”
That mattered.
He carried guilt.
I told him:
“You did stop it.”
Late does not mean never.
Sometimes people freeze inside hierarchy too.
Arthur had served my father before me.
Challenging the future mistress of the house felt almost unthinkable.
He did it anyway.
Eventually.
