Chapter 9

Widower succession was not an official Ferraro rule.

That made it worse.

It was an old belief.

A boss distracted by grief could be “helped” by family until he recovered. In practice, that meant older men stepped back into decisions, controlled crews, and decided what stability required.

Augusto had once benefited from it after Luciano’s mother died.

Luciano remembered that year differently now.

His father had called it mourning.

The family had called it consolidation.

Celeste looked at Augusto with open disgust. “So if I had been hurt badly enough, you had another plan.”

Augusto shook his head. “No one planned that outcome.”

“But you prepared for it.”

Silence.

Dario sat down hard on the bottom stair.

He looked younger suddenly.

Not innocent.

Just exposed.

“I didn’t know.”

Luciano turned.

Dario looked at Celeste.

“I swear I didn’t know about that.”

She stared at him.

“You pushed me.”

“I know.”

“You pushed your pregnant sister-in-law down a staircase because you wanted your brother angry on camera.”

Dario closed his eyes.

There was no defense worth saying.

Luciano watched him carefully.

For the first time, Dario’s guilt looked real.

That did not erase anything.

But it changed the shape of the conspiracy.

Augusto had told Dario enough to make him useful.

Not enough to make him informed.

Anthony examined the audio metadata.

“It came through the security network.”

Luciano looked toward the hallway.

His security chief.

Marco DeLuca.

The man from the nursery clip.

“Bring him.”

Two guards went.

They returned alone.

Marco was gone.

His office had been cleared.

No coat.

No phone.

No car.

Luciano looked at Anthony.

“When?”

“Within the last twenty minutes.”

Nora frowned.

“He knew the phone was taken.”

Luciano understood.

Someone in the foyer had warned him.

He looked around at forty family members and guests.

Every face suddenly mattered.

The trap had not ended with Dario and Augusto.

Someone else inside the reception was still connected to Marco.

Celeste followed Luciano’s gaze.

Then quietly said, “He’s not running because you found the recording.”

Luciano looked at her.

“He’s running because the plan failed.”

May you like

She glanced toward the nursery hallway.

“And he had another job to finish.”
