Chapter 17

Four months later, the same foyer held another family gathering.

No graduation display.

No hidden phones.

No old patriarch directing where people stood.

Celeste arrived carrying their newborn son.

Luciano walked beside her.

Not ahead.

Dario was there too, though far from command and quieter than anyone remembered him. He kept his distance from Celeste unless she spoke first.

That was part of the consequence.

Augusto did not attend.

He lived at another Ferraro property with no council access, no private crew, and no authority over the grandchildren he had once planned to use as succession pieces.

Nora stood near the floral arrangement.

She glanced at the marble console.

Then at Luciano.

“You want to know something weird?”

“What?”

“I almost didn’t grab the phone that night.”

Luciano looked at her.

“Why?”

“I thought it wasn’t my business.”

Celeste heard.

She smiled faintly.

“That’s how bad families survive.”

Nora looked at her.

“Everyone keeps deciding something isn’t their business.”

Luciano remembered Anthony staying quiet about the old captain questions.

Dario telling himself the stairs were safe.

Augusto telling himself no one was supposed to get hurt.

Rafael watching because he wanted proof.

Different people.

Same excuse.

The baby stirred in Celeste’s arms.

Luciano reached for him.

Celeste handed him over.

No ceremony.

No symbolism.

Just trust.

Dario watched from across the room.

For a moment, pain crossed his face.

Not jealousy.

Regret.

Luciano saw it and let it exist.

Some wounds did not need immediate closure.

Near the staircase, Nora placed her phone on the marble console to take a family picture.

Luciano noticed the angle.

So did Celeste.

They looked at each other.

Then laughed.

Nora frowned.

“What?”

“Nothing,” Celeste said.

She walked over, picked up the phone, and handed it back.

“Hold it yourself.”

Nora smiled.

“Fair.”

No hidden camera.

No arranged reaction.

No one waiting for Luciano to become the man they had already decided he was.

That night, the Ferraro family took one photograph together.

Luciano held his son.

May you like

Celeste stood beside him.

And for the first time, nobody behind the camera was trying to turn love into evidence.
