Chapter 8

Rafael Ferraro died thirty-four years earlier.

Augusto had told everyone his brother slipped near a ravine during a hunting weekend.

Anthony had been twenty-four.

Young enough to obey.

Old enough to remember.

“He didn’t slip,” Anthony said.

Augusto’s face became gray.

Luciano did not interrupt.

Anthony continued.

“Rafael wanted to leave the family council.”

Celeste looked at him.

“Why?”

“His wife was pregnant. He didn’t want the child raised inside the same succession fight he grew up in.”

Luciano looked at Augusto.

The parallels were too clean.

Dario saw them too.

“You killed Uncle Rafael?”

Augusto snapped, “No.”

Anthony’s expression tightened.

“No. But you let him think the trail was safe.”

Silence.

Augusto stared at him.

Anthony kept going.

“Your father had ordered Rafael frightened. Just frightened. Enough to make him stay.”

Celeste closed her eyes.

That phrase again.

Just enough.

Never meant to hurt.

Always meant to control.

Anthony said Rafael was chased on horseback toward the ravine by men loyal to the old patriarch. One man rode too close. Rafael’s horse panicked.

He went over.

His pregnant wife fled the family three days later.

Luciano felt cold.

“What happened to her?”

Anthony hesitated.

Augusto answered.

“She disappeared.”

Celeste looked at him.

“You mean you don’t know.”

Augusto’s jaw tightened.

Luciano understood something else.

The Ferraro family had carried this pattern for generations.

Create fear.

Call it discipline.

Lose someone.

Rewrite the loss.

Move on.

Dario looked sick now.

“You knew this happened.”

Augusto stared at him.

“And you still used Celeste.”

His father’s answer was quiet.

“Nothing was supposed to happen to her.”

Dario laughed.

The sound broke halfway through.

“That’s what Grandfather said about Rafael, isn’t it?”

Augusto said nothing.

For the first time, Dario looked at Celeste not with resentment or arrogance.

With shame.

Then Nora spoke from behind them.

“There’s something else on the phone.”

Luciano turned.

A hidden audio file.

Recorded before the foyer video started.

Only twelve seconds.

A man’s voice said:

“If Celeste falls badly, we move to the old plan.”

Augusto closed his eyes.

Luciano stared at him.

“What old plan?”

May you like

Dario whispered the answer.

“Widower succession.”
