Chapter 2

The heavy thud of the steel rod striking the earth seemed to echo across the yard, instantly silencing the polite murmurs of the surrounding guests. Domenico had already registered the sudden, violent movement before the rod even made contact with the grass. Leaving the two capos mid-sentence, the Mafia boss moved with a terrifying, explosive speed that utterly defied the heavy elegance of his three-piece suit.

He crossed the distance between the patio and the flower bed in a matter of seconds. Domenico did not look at his cousin yet; his entire focus was strictly on the sobbing child on the ground. He crouched smoothly, his polished leather shoes pressing into the grass, and lifted Eli safely into his broad arms.

"I have you, Eli," Domenico whispered, his deep, raspy voice dropping into a register of profound, protective gentleness. "You are safe."

"Daddy…" Eli sobbed, his tiny hands clutching the lapels of Domenico’s suit jacket. The boy’s fair, rosy face was wet with tears, his small body trembling as he spoke between heavy, jagged hiccups. "That ball is mine. I brought it from inside."

"I know it is yours," Domenico assured him smoothly, gently brushing a stray blade of grass from the boy's cheek. "Nobody is taking it from you."

Conrad stood his ground, leaning slightly on the steel rod, attempting to project a bravado that his suddenly pale face betrayed. "The boy needs to learn boundaries, Domenico. He was hovering around the equipment."

Before Domenico could address the staggering audacity of the statement, the sharp click of high heels sounded against the stone pathway. Miriam Ravello, a sixty-six-year-old senior relative, stepped directly into the space between the two men. She wore an elegant summer outfit, her neck and wrists draped in heavy pearl jewelry that clacked as she moved. Instead of checking on the crying three-year-old, she positioned herself as a shield for Conrad, her posture rigid and arrogant.

"Do not overreact, Domenico," Miriam said, her tone entirely dismissive. She waved a ring-adorned hand in the air. "He’s a boy. Fear teaches respect. It is how this family has always raised its men."

Domenico did not blink. He kept Eli securely pressed against his chest, adjusting his heavy signet ring as he wrapped his arm around the child's back. He slowly, deliberately shifted his cold, intimidating eyes from Miriam’s arrogant face to Conrad’s sweating brow.

"You think fear teaches respect, Miriam?" Domenico asked. The measured, icy slowness of his words caused the ambient temperature in the yard to plummet. "Or do you think it breeds cowards who strike at children?"

"I was setting a boundary," Conrad stammered, gripping the rod tighter. "He wouldn't listen."

"You are about to learn what a boundary truly is," Domenico replied, his voice deadly and hollow.
