Chapter 6

The ring had history.
Not ancient history.
Recent.
I had it made after Leo was born.
A small ceremonial signet, never intended for him to wear as a toddler. It belonged in the family vault beside letters from his grandmother and photographs from the year I took leadership.
I had not seen it in two years.
“How did Frank get this?”
My steward looked sick.
“He requested access.”
“When?”
“Six weeks ago.”
“Reason?”
“Family inventory.”
I closed my eyes.
Of course.
Nobody questioned him.
Again.
Frank took a symbol belonging to Leo and resized it for Olivia.
That detail mattered.
This was not another ring.
He altered my son’s.
I confronted him with the jeweler’s receipt.
“You had Leo’s ring cut down.”
Frank barely flinched.
“Symbols should serve the family.”
I stared.
“He is the family.”
“So is Olivia.”
“Yes.”
I leaned forward.
“That is why she should have had something of her own.”
Silence.
He had done more than promise her a place.
He promised her Leo’s specific place.
Not inclusion.
Replacement.
Damon finally looked disturbed.
“You told me it was a new ring.”
Frank shrugged.
“Would it have changed anything?”
“Yes.”
Damon answered before I could.
For the first time, my brother understood the thing he had helped build.
His daughter was not being elevated.
She was being positioned to inherit a stolen symbol.
That is different.
