Chapter 5

The bodyguards Frank looked toward finally explained themselves.
Two had been told not to intervene.
By Frank.
One showed me the message.
Birthday game is approved. Vivian knows. Do not embarrass the family by interrupting unless there is direct injury.
I stared at the words.
Direct injury.
Meaning fear did not count.
Almost being struck did not count.
A child tied to a post did not count.
Only blood would have activated protection.
I looked at the guard.
“Did that seem normal?”
“No.”
“Then why follow it?”
He swallowed.
“Because it came from your father.”
There.
Past authority outranking present authority.
Frank had not held operational power in six years, yet people still treated his tone like permission.
I removed both guards from child-related duty immediately.
Not because I believed they were cruel.
Because hesitation around children is enough.
One of them looked devastated.
“I thought you knew.”
“I didn’t.”
“I should have checked.”
“Yes.”
No speech softened it.
The system failed because nobody verified the person whose name was being used.
Again.
My father knew it.
That was why he glanced toward the guards when the ring fell.
He was not looking for rescue.
May you like
He was checking whether his authority still held.
It did not.
