Chapter 4

The tension on the bright, manicured lawn was absolute. The surrounding guests, all white American adults dressed in formal garden attire, froze in place. The vibrant colors of the summer dresses and tailored suits seemed to blur into the background as everyone’s attention locked onto the confrontation.

"I warned you," Serafina said, her voice dropping to a terrifyingly quiet whisper.

Nolan’s pride completely overrode his common sense. Furious at being challenged in front of the entire family and his father, he pulled his right arm back. With a grunt of exertion, Nolan threw a heavy, looping punch aimed directly at Serafina’s face.

He expected her to flinch. He expected her to cower.

Instead, Serafina moved with the precision of a seasoned combatant. She slipped her head slightly to the outside, allowing Nolan’s fist to sail harmlessly past her ear. In the same fluid motion, her left hand shot up, clamping around his extended wrist, completely controlling his momentum and locking his arm in place.

With Nolan exposed and off-balance, Serafina rotated her hips, driving her right fist forward in one explosive, devastating counterpunch. Her knuckles connected cleanly with the side of Nolan’s face, right across his cheekbone and jaw.

The sickening crack of the impact echoed across the silent lawn.

Nolan’s eyes rolled back. The sheer, terrifying kinetic force of the blow lifted the forty-two-year-old man off his loafers. He spun violently backward, completely out of control, his arms flailing as he hurtled toward the staging area where the event staff had left their equipment.

He collided directly into the heavy, rolling folding-chair dolly.

The impact was catastrophic. The metal dolly shot backward across the pristine grass with a screeching metallic groan. Dozens of stacked, lightweight white chairs instantly lost their balance. They unfolded in a chaotic, cascading sequence, springing open and scattering wildly across the lawn like exploding shrapnel.

Nolan crashed straight through the center of the collapsing metal frames. He hit the ground in a tangled heap of twisted aluminum, canvas, and grass, his body going completely limp before he even finished sliding.

There was no dialogue in the immediate aftermath. The sheer, overwhelming violence of the strike silenced every single person in the garden.

"Mom?" Leo whispered, his voice trembling as he peeked out from behind Serafina’s suit jacket, his blue eyes wide with shock.

"Stay behind me, Leo," Serafina instructed softly, never taking her eyes off the wreckage.

"Someone call a doctor!" a female guest shrieked from the patio, breaking the spell of silence. "He's not moving!"

"Nobody calls anyone," Serafina commanded, her voice ringing out with such absolute authority that the panicked guest instantly clamped her mouth shut.

Serafina stood tall, her breathing perfectly even, fixing her cuffs. She had struck with the precision of an assassin, proving exactly why she held the position she did. But the violence was far from over.
