Chapter 3

The cinematic, natural light of the afternoon seemed to sharpen into a harsh, glaring spotlight on the violent scene. Serafina closed the distance across the bright green lawn with terrifying speed. She didn't sprint; she walked with the absolute, unstoppable momentum of a tidal wave.

Before Nolan even realized she had crossed the garden, Serafina’s hands were on him. She seized the fabric of his expensive polo shirt by the shoulder and the collar, her grip like industrial steel. With a sudden, explosive exertion of force, she tore the forty-two-year-old man completely off her son.

Nolan stumbled wildly, his loafers skidding on the grass as he was thrown several feet away.

"Get up, Leo. Get behind me," Serafina ordered, her voice a low, vibrating hum of pure adrenaline and rage. She reached out, pulling a weeping Mia by the hand and guiding both of her children safely behind the protective barrier of her tailored three-piece suit.

"Are you out of your mind, Serafina?" Nolan sputtered, recovering his balance and brushing off his trousers. "I was teaching the boy a lesson about respect! He was talking back!"

"You put your hands on my children," Serafina said, her American accent dripping with lethal intent. "You will not leave this estate with those hands intact."

From a few feet away, seated comfortably on a padded garden bench beneath a white umbrella, Victor Bellandi let out a booming, arrogant laugh. The sixty-seven-year-old senior family member wore a pristine formal summer suit, his polished shoes crossed casually at the ankles. He took a slow sip from his crystal glass, the ice clinking loudly.

"Oh, calm down, Serafina," Victor mocked, his voice carrying the entitled weight of a patriarch who believed he was untouchable. He waved his signet-ringed hand dismissively at her. "The boy needs to be toughened up. You coddle him too much."

"Stay out of this, Victor," Serafina warned without taking her eyes off Nolan.

Victor just laughed harder, swirling the amber liquid in his glass. "Listen to her, Nolan. She thinks she's a soldier. She handles numbers, Nolan. Don’t scare her."

Emboldened by his father’s mocking support and deeply humiliated by being thrown off a child by a woman, Nolan’s fair face turned a blotchy, furious red. He puffed out his chest, stepping aggressively, directly into Serafina’s personal space.

"Did you hear my father?" Nolan hissed, leaning down so his face was inches from hers. "You’re just a glorified accountant. You sit at a desk and count the money the real men bring in. You don't give me orders."

"Take exactly one step backward, Nolan," Serafina advised, her eyes dead and cold. "Or I will break your jaw."

"You won't do a damn thing," Nolan scoffed, raising his hand. "Now get out of my way before I show you what respect really looks like."
