Chapter 7

The camera angle shifted to a tight close-up of Noel.

The six-year-old boy, still tightly gripping Lena’s hand, stepped slightly to the side. He moved just enough to look past the dark, tailored fabric of his father's suit. He looked directly at Evelina.

The fair, rosy skin of Noel's cheeks was damp with continuous tears. He had been terribly confused and frightened, his innocent mind struggling to comprehend the cruel punishment he had been subjected to by the woman who was supposed to become his stepmother.

But feeling the heavy, reassuring presence of his father standing as a physical shield between him and the monster across the table gave Noel a sudden, desperate surge of courage.

His inner brows lifted helplessly, an expression of profound, wounded betrayal. His small fingers tightened even further around Lena’s hand, drawing strength from her maternal warmth.

He spoke softly, his voice echoing clearly across the ivory-paneled walls and gilded moldings.

“You said Daddy wouldn’t notice.”

The absolute, terrifying implication of the child's words crashed over the dining hall. Evelina had not just locked the boy away; she had actively, maliciously taunted him with the belief that his father did not care for him, attempting to sever the bond between father and son to secure her own absolute power.

The collective silence of the wealthy, powerful guests transformed into a suffocating vacuum. The level of calculated, psychopathic ambition required to execute such a psychological torture sickened the men and women at the tables. In the violent world of the American Mafia, a boss's child was an untouchable, sacred entity.

Evelina’s polite, reassuring smile disappeared instantly. The facade completely shattered.

Her eyes settled on Noel for a fraction of a second, filled with a mixture of profound panic and vicious, unadulterated anger. Then, her gaze moved anxiously, frantically, back toward Corbin. She was desperately searching his face for any sign of mercy, any indication that he might forgive the ultimate betrayal.

"Corbin, he is lying!" Evelina shrieked, her voice pitching up into a hysterical, defensive frequency. She pointed a shaking, diamond-clad finger at the little boy. "He is a traumatized child! His mind is combining memories! The maid put him up to this!"

The camera angle shifted to a tight close-up of Corbin.

Corbin held Noel’s gaze for a brief, painful beat. He absorbed the sheer trauma radiating from his son, the innocent child who had been manipulated and terrorized in the shadows of his own home. The rigid lines of his angular face softened by a fraction of a millimeter toward the boy, a silent promise of absolute, uncompromising protection.

Then, Corbin slowly shifted his eyes toward Evelina. His head followed slightly, a slow, predatory turn that sent a shockwave of terror through the room.

His jaw firmed almost imperceptibly, the muscles flexing beneath his extremely short, neatly trimmed stubble. His mouth became completely still.

He held her gaze with a cold, knowing stare.

Silence. The visual standoff suspended the dining hall in a state of impending doom. Every single guest in the massive, opulent room remained perfectly attentive, facing him, paralyzed by the public unmasking of the future bride. The end of the prompt sequence left the room trapped in this suffocating vacuum of terror.
