Chapter 1

The engagement dinner inside the sprawling Wexler mansion was a blinding display of orchestrated perfection. Cascading crystal chandeliers hung from the vaulted ceilings, their countless prisms casting a warm, golden light across the grand dining hall. The generous illumination clearly revealed every face in the room, highlighting the fair, rosy skin and crisp American accents of the country's most powerful syndicate leaders. Ivory wall panels, accented with heavy gilded moldings, framed a massive carved marble fireplace where a roaring fire crackled against the winter chill. Polished walnut tables were surrounded by plush champagne velvet chairs, each setting meticulously arranged with fine porcelain, crystal stemware, and gleaming silver candelabras that flickered above pristine arrangements of white roses.
Standing near the head of the main table, projecting an aura of absolute authority, was Corbin Wexler. At forty-four, the Mafia boss possessed a movie-star handsomeness that commanded the room effortlessly. His broad, powerful shoulders filled out a tailored dark three-piece suit with lethal grace. He had an angular face, a high-bridged nose, and a sharply defined jaw shadowed by extremely short, neatly trimmed stubble. Thick, slightly wavy hair was swept naturally back, though a few loose strands fell casually across his forehead. His cold, perceptive eyes surveyed the crowd. Refined artistic tattoos crept across his hands and fingers with generous spacing, while a small, intricate neck tattoo peeked above his collar. A heavy family signet ring gleamed on his hand alongside a polished wristwatch.
"The evening is an absolute triumph, Corbin," a senior capo remarked, raising his crystal glass. "You have outdone yourself."
Corbin slowly turned his signet ring, his cold gaze shifting to the man. His deep, low voice rolled through the space, punctuated by measured pauses.
"Is there any reason to celebrate a union with mediocrity, Thomas?"
His dialogue consisted exclusively of questions, a long-standing, chilling habit that forced everyone around him into a constant state of anxious defense.
"No, sir. Of course not," the capo stammered, his rosy cheeks flushing deeper before he retreated into the crowd.
Standing directly opposite Corbin was his fiancée, Evelina Shaw. At thirty-three, she was a vision of sculpted aristocracy in a sapphire satin evening gown that clung flawlessly to her slender frame. Diamond earrings flashed brilliantly against her fair skin, matching the massive engagement ring on her left hand. She offered a courteous, carefully maintained public smile to the guests, though her eyes were sharp and calculating.
"You are making them nervous, darling," Evelina murmured smoothly, her American accent dripping with practiced charm. "Can you not offer them a single statement of comfort?"
"Do wolves require comfort before they feed, Evelina?" Corbin inquired, his gaze drifting away from her.
May you like
"They are our guests, not wolves," she laughed softly, adjusting her diamond necklace. "I simply want tonight to be perfect. Where is your son? I haven't seen Noel since the cocktail hour."
"Have you checked the upper residential wing?" Corbin asked, his eyes narrowing slightly as he scanned the heavy silk curtains framing the arched doorways, a sudden, inexplicable tension tightening his broad shoulders.
